An estimated 2 percent to 6 percent of U.S. adults are morbidly obese. According to the National Institutes of Health, surgery is the only proven method of achieving long-term weight loss for morbid obesity.
And for people like Susie Rohling, it's more than a physical healing. Sentara CarePlex Hospital Bariatric Program Coordinator Susie Rohling, RN had something in common with her patients -- an extra 100 pounds and some serious health concerns.
"For people who have never experienced it, it's a matter of getting your life back," said Susie, who is now really participating in life.
Not only is she the bariatric program coordinator at Sentara CarePlex Hospital, she's coordinator for the national Walk from Obesity.
As a former bariatric patient herself, Susie shares her experiences about how she reclaimed her life and self image with her patients as a coordinator, sounding board and even cheerleader, at times.
Susie is celebrating life and hoping to increase awareness about obesity by coordinating the national event hosted for the region only at Sentara Port Warwick Medical Arts in Newport News Saturday, September 24.
This nationwide event, sponsored by The Weight Loss Surgery Center of Hampton Roads and Sentara Hampton Health & Fitness Center, is designed to increase awareness of the life-threatening implications of obesity and raise funds for research into such causes, prevention and advanced treatments for the disease.
