Norfolk, Va.-February 23, 2006 - Construction is complete and the doors are opening for the regions only dedicated heart hospital, Sentara Heart Hospital, this Saturday, February 25, 2006. Devoted to cardiac care, the new 6-story, 324,000 square foot, $94.5 million facility enables patients seeking heart care to receive comprehensive servicesfrom diagnostics and interventional cardiology to open-heart surgery and transplantationall under one roof. The first patients will be transferred beginning at 7 a.m.

Sentara Heart Hospital is located on the Sentara Norfolk General Hospital campus, adjacent to the River Pavilion. The state-of-the-art, digital hospital adjoins the River Pavilion on the first, second and third floors, linking it to the existing campus to facilitate patient care.

The construction of Sentara Heart Hospital is a tangible demonstration of that commitment. Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is recognized as one of the best hospitals in the country for heart care. In the 2005 U.S. News & World Report ranking, Sentara Norfolk General Hospitals cardiac mortality outcomes were better than 9 of the top 10 programs in the country.

Sentara Heart Hospital will bring together under one roof the longstanding, synchronized team of cardiac specialists including nationally respected heart surgeons, cardiologists, cardiac anesthesiologists, technologists, nurses and moreall dedicated to providing superb care to heart patients, said Glenn R. Barnhart, M.D., cardiothoracic surgeon. This skilled team has performed more than 2,000 cardiac surgeries per year and is part of the largest cardiac program in Virginia, Dr. Barnhart said.

Dr. Barnhart also acknowledged the cardiac teams commitment to delivering quality results. This level of experience coupled with the state-of-the art technology in the new heart hospital will continue to result in quality outcomes that cannot be rivaled in the region, and our results position us clearly among the top programs in the country, Dr. Barnhart said.

By building on the successes of Sentara Norfolk General Hospitals nationally recognized heart program, Sentara is leveraging its cardiac resources to research, educate, prevent and treat the nationsand Hampton Roadsnumber one killer.

Sentara Heart Hospital will benefit patients throughout the Mid-Atlantic, said Bruce Holstien, administrator of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Sentara Heart Hospital features the latest technology and equipment, designed not only to diagnose and treat heart disease, but to facilitate heart wellness. Housing our exceptional cardiac programs in one facility further enhances our effectiveness and it makes Sentara Heart Hospital a destination hospital, Holstien said.

Sentara Heart Hospital features all private rooms, including 112 licensed inpatient beds and 45 pre/post procedural rooms dedicated to patients undergoing interventional cardiac procedures. Sentara Heart Hospital is also opening with 5 cardiac operating rooms designed to accommodate 2,000 cardiac surgery procedures annually.

Patients will also benefit from the regions only cardiac eICU offering round-the-clock electronic monitoring of heart patients, a suite of 6 cardiac catheterization labs with capacity to handle about 2,000 catheterization procedures annually, and 3 electrophysiology (EP) labs.

Sentara Heart Hospital also features the regions first commercially available 64-slice CTA scanner for cardiac imaging.

Larger, all-private rooms include pull-out sofas to promote family involvement in the patients care. Refreshment areas, quiet areas, and unique business centers with Internet access are among the amenities available. Clinical areas have been designed to improve workflow and electronic charting enables nurses to be closer to their patients bedside. A new, 4-story parking garage with more than 450 spaces is also available and free valet parking is offered at the main entrance.

Since the inception of Sentara's cardiac program in 1967, Sentara clinicians and doctors have performed more than 39,000 open-heart surgeries, more than 130,000 interventional procedures and more than 245 heart transplants.

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital became the first Hampton Roads hospital to implant a drug-eluting stent in 2003 using the latest in interventional cardiology devices to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Sentara Norfolk General Hospitals cardiac program ranked 23rd out of the top 50 U.S. hospitals named for cardiac care excellence in the 2005 survey by U.S. News & World Report, the only hospital in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina to earn a place in the survey.

As part of its comprehensive heart program, Sentara developed the first cardiovascular research institute in the region, and Sentara continues to make a significant commitment to research, providing its patients the latest treatment options.
