- Waiting for the results of a biopsy can be nerve-wracking. Patients are understandably anxious to know their results, says David Stockwell, M.D., a gastroenterologist who often removes intestinal polyps and biopsies lesions to see if theyre cancerous. Rapid biopsy results allow me to make timely medical decisions.
Sentara Laboratories has made strides on both fronts by introducing, exclusively in Hampton Roads, the Sakura Xpress Continuous Rapid Tissue Processor
. This state-of-the-art diagnostic technology produces the fastest return times for biopsy results anywhere in Hampton Roads.
"This technology is a breakthrough for patients and physicians," says Sylvia Richendollar, vice president of Sentara laboratories. "Patients hear the results sooner and physicians know more quickly what they need to do for their patients."
For Dr. Stockwell, the technology paid benefits with a recent patient who received the results of an intestinal biopsy within 24-hours.
"It was a localized cancer," Dr. Stockwell says. "The patient went to surgery rapidly and the results were excellent."
" For my patient," Dr. Stockwell adds, "it was a great relief to have all this happen quickly."
Sentara recently invested $800,000 in this cutting-edge technology that compliments the full-service molecular diagnostic capabilities introduced last year. Two of the Sakura analyzers are at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital to service the southside region and two more are at Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center to service the Peninsula.
"I couldn't be happier that this technology is available in Hampton Roads," says Dr. Stockwell. "It makes my job a lot easier."
