Virginia Beach, VA - June 12, 2006 - The Virginia Business Coalition on Health has awarded one of two 2006 Wellness in the Workplace awards to Sentara Healthcare for its Healthy Edge program. The award recognized Sentara's excellence in employee health promotion and the use of incentives to improve employees health. Sentara received the award for an employer with more than 10,000 employees.
Healthy Edge is a wellness and preventative service offered to all Sentara employees, providing educational and fitness programs. Along with free membership, the programs benefits include: a yearly health assessment, fitness classes, programs to promote health, fitness, and healthy lifestyles, flex credits for practicing preventive health measures, and drawings for gift certificates and cash prizes.
Sentaras mammography, prostate cancer, and colorectal cancer programs have proven to be extremely successful. For instance, Sentara offers every eligible employee a convenient mammography test performed while at work. In the past year 59% of eligible women have taken advantage of the Mammo Van, which sets up at work sites throughout the Sentara system, says Terrina Thomas, Director of Health and Preventive Services at Sentara.
In addition, Sentaras WalkAbout program is incentive based and pedometer driven. Each participant is given a pedometer and asked to walk 10,000 steps a day on their own. So far, 8,000 employees have participated. All of our programs are incentive based. We know it helps people to participate, says Thomas. Sentaras employees are more productive, happier, and healthier as a result.
The award was presented at the annual VBCH Business and Health Summit held this past Thursday June 8, 2006 at the new Virginia Beach Convention Center.
