Newport News, Virginia – September 24, 2007— The first Peninsula patients are experiencing some of the area’s most comprehensive and technologically advanced outpatient imaging capabilities with the debut of the Advanced Imaging Center at Sentara Port Warwick.

The Peninsula’s strongest open MRI is now available to patients—including those weighing up to 550 pounds or with claustrophobia—who may have dreaded having an MRI or magnetic resonance imaging before. Customer convenience and advanced capabilities for precise and speedy diagnosis are hallmarks of the new center.

With a magnet more than twice as strong as other area open MRIs (1.5 Tesla), this machine creates higher quality images read by subspecialized radiologists. Used to diagnose sports-related injuries, especially those affecting the knee, shoulder, hip, elbow and wrist, physicians can see even the smallest tears and injuries to ligaments and muscles. This MRI can also be used to provide pictures of the heart, aorta, coronary arteries and blood vessels, organs of the chest and abdomen, and breasts for early diagnosis of breast disease.

The cylinder of Sentara’s newest MRI machine is shorter—only about four feet—and much wider, creating a more open feel. Patients enter this MRI feet first, and most procedures do not require a patient’s head to enter the super-sized cylinder.

The Advanced Imaging Center at Sentara Port Warwick also offers the speed and precision of the 32-slice Computed Tomography (CT) scanner — one of the industry’s fastest imaging tools than can scan head to toe in six seconds. From bone to soft tissue and blood vessels, the 32-slice CT scanner gains precise images used to quickly diagnose cancer, cardiovascular disease, infectious diseases, trauma and musculoskeletal disorders. Advanced imaging at the campus also includes the capability to provide breast MRI and digital mammography under the evaluation of a fellowship trained breast imager and image guided biopsies, along with ultrasound and bone densitometry.

“By combining the latest screening technology available today with an enhanced focus on customer service, the Advanced Imaging Center will no doubt set a new standard for patient care and convenience in the region,” said Kurt Hofelich, Vice President of Sentara Imaging Services. “Rapid image access and subspeciality interpretation by physicians will go a long way toward enhancing the patient’s quality of care in imaging.”

Like Sentara’s other Advanced Imaging Centers, patients and physicians using the Advanced Imaging Center at Port Warwick will experience a new level of customer service and convenience. For referring physicians, the Advanced Imaging Center at Sentara Port Warwick offers same-day scheduling and results reporting, secure desktop access to test results using designated software and high-speed Internet, soft and hard copy images, sub-specialist interpretations, and the opportunity to speak directly with a radiologist at any time.

Patients will benefit from a focus on customer service, beginning with ample free parking, an interview to help staff better understand their needs, and an innovative patient lounge will feature wireless computer capabilities, providing portals for personal laptop use, and complimentary flavored coffees.
