Offers Hope for Arthritic Knee Sufferers

Suffolk, Va., - September 22, 2008 - When pain management and lifestyle changes are not enough to keep knee pain from interfering with your life and your lifestyle, patients now have another option in Western Tidewater. It’s called the JourneyDeuce™ Knee System and provides patients with another choice in the surgical intervention of knee pain.

“This exciting new technology gives my patients an alternative to total knee replacement,” according to Dr. Aaron Marlow of Orthopaedic Surgery Centers. “Patient satisfaction is very high with this procedure because of the shortened recovery time and the more natural feel of the implant.”

Introduction of Knee System Spares Bones & Ligaments

The JourneyDeuce™ Knee System, is a partial knee-resurfacing implant that preserves bones and ligaments otherwise sacrificed during total knee replacement.

“The goal in joint replacement surgery is relief of pain, restoration of normal range of motion and function and a durable result.” according to Dr. A.J. Distasio with Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center, Inc. “This system helps us do just that.”

The knee is comprised of three compartments: the medial (inside), the lateral (outside) and the patellofemoral (middle). Ostheoarthritis in the knee region can afflict one, two or all three of these compartments, making simple daily living activities painful.

Traditionally, if just two of these compartments had signs of ostheoarthritis, the patient would undergo total knee replacement that required cutting the ligaments at the knee. These ligaments support the back and forth movement of the knee. This newer method removes only the diseased portion of the knee before placing the implant, leaving the healthy portion untouched. And the knee’s normal ligaments are retained providing for faster recovery time and improved range of motion for the patient.

Millions of Americans have had traditional knee replacement surgery, enabling them — after weeks or months of recovery — to once again walk with minimal or no pain.

Two Physician Groups Trained in New Procedure

Dr. A. J. Distasio of Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Center and Dr. Aaron Marlow of Orthopaedic Surgery Centers are the first surgeons in the Hampton Roads region to be trained in this new procedure.

According to Dr. Distasio, “up to 70 percent of patients who would normally receive a total knee replacement could benefit from this less invasive procedure.”

This news just got even better for residents of the Western Tidewater area when both surgeons performed this innovative procedure recently at Sentara Obici Hospital.
