NORFOLK, Virginia - February 13, 2008 --Sentara Healthcare’s operations, quality, efficiency and breadth of services have again landed the system among the country’s best health care providers.

Sentara has ranked 5th in Verispan’s listing of the top 100 integrated health care networks. Verispan, a health care data and consulting company, lists its top 100 rankings each year in Modern Healthcare magazine. Sentara has been ranked among the nation’s top providers all 11 years of the survey. Verispan’s annual health network assessment is regarded as the nation’s premier rating system evaluating the performance, quality and degree of integration of health care networks.

“Integrated care means better care,” says Sentara CEO David Bernd. “Sentara’s resources and people are working together to achieve the quality of care and service we want for our patients.”

With the goal of providing the highest level of care and managing costs, an integrated health care network (IHN) brings together a mix of facilities, practitioners, technologies and business functions. Sentara is an integrated system that provides a wide range of health care services: primary, specialty, urgent and emergency care; inpatient and outpatient hospitalization; long term care; home care and hospice; insurance, and other services that work together to provide patients with a coordinated and convenient continuum of care.

“By effectively integrating our systems, we can provide faster diagnosis and, thus, faster treatments for our patients,” adds Bernd.

For Sentara, integration also allows greater efficiency across the system. This means implementing new systems and technologies in a more coordinated approach, according to Bernd.

Sentara eCare®, a comprehensive electronic medical record system, is one such example. This new technology will electronically connect physician offices, outpatient facilities, hospitals, long-term care facilities and Optima Health.

“Sentara eCare® will lead to improved communication among medical providers and patients,” says Bernd. “This investment in technology across the system allows us to provide better, safer patient care.”
