Region’s First Dedicated Orthopedic Hospital to Open Early 2010
Final beam raised Friday, March 27 at 11:30 a.m.
March 27, 2009 – Hampton, VA – Sentara commemorates the completion of the steel structure of the Orthopaedic Hospital at Sentara CarePlex. On schedule to open early 2010, it will be the region’s only dedicated orthopedic hospital.
The Orthopaedic Hospital at Sentara CarePlex, a nearly 55,000 s.f., two-story addition to the hospital will provide patients access to the full continuum of orthopedic services from the pre-operative phase and surgery to rehabilitation and home care services. The sole focus on orthopedics at this facility lends itself to more involvement in clinical research studies.
The topping out celebration is a traditional event held by construction crews once the steel frame of a new building is complete. The final uppermost steel beam was set in place March 27, 2009, at 11:30 a.m. with workers and staff signing their names on the beam prior to its installation. The proceedings took place on the north side of the hospital at the current York River entrance at 3000 Coliseum Drive.
“Our design took into account the input of patients who had experienced orthopedic care in the past. We’re going to do our best to incorporate most of what they told us to respond directly to the needs of the community,” says Sentara CarePlex Hospital Administrator Debra Flores.
The fellowship trained physicians of Tidewater Orthopaedic Associates, the largest group of orthopedic subspecialists serving the Peninsula, will provide the surgical services at the new facility. Dedicated orthopedic teams of nurses, OR staff, and other multidisciplinary clinicians also offer specialized orthopedic care.
“Because our program will be complete, including something call prehab that helps build up and strengthen people who are preparing for surgery, I truly believe our patient outcomes will be even better,” continues Flores.
