A pilot program with employers to improve health and reduce healthcare costs
Virginia Beach, VA – October 1, 2009 – Optima Health launched a two-year pilot program, Healthy At Work, with employers throughout the state in an effort to improve employee health and reduce healthcare costs. Optima Health currently has similar programs in place for large employer groups. This pilot allows groups with as few as 25 employees to participate.
“As a broker working with large and small employers, I am pleased to see that Optima’s Healthy At Work program offers the smaller employee groups a great opportunity to have the innovative, tailored programs that larger employers enjoy,” comments Mary Anne Strickland with Rutherfoord Insurance Services.
Pilot participants are selected based on specific parameters, such as number of employees and employee access to computer/Internet. The employers in the program are rewarded by a cap, not to exceed, on premiums at their next renewal during the two-year pilot program, as long as they are compliant with the terms of the agreement. In return, employers must engage employees to participate in the program. First, they must complete a confidential Personal Health Profile that provides Optima a baseline health assessment on each employee and identifies any current health risks. This will enable Optima to identify areas of need and track changes throughout the pilot. Additionally, employers must identify a Wellness Coach to create simple programs with Optima’s guidance that can help employees become healthier, such as a stairs walk program or healthy snacks in the vending machine.
In return, Optima will work with employees and their family members that have any medical issues, such as diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, to help them manage their health. Also, employees can access MyLife MyPlan, Optima’s spectrum of health and prevention services that focuses on helping individuals stay healthy. There is an array of programs, tools and services that focuses on nutrition, fitness, and tobacco cessation.
“At Optima, we know that keeping people healthy is critical to lowering healthcare costs across the board. The Healthy At Work pilot program recognizes small employers and their employees for taking an active role in managing their healthcare,” comments John DeGruttola, senior vice president for marketing and sales at Optima Health.
Optima Health philosophy for health management is that by managing and controlling disease and engaging individuals to have healthy lifestyles, healthcare costs will be reduced. Statistics show that healthy employees are more productive and happier.
