Growth and Technology Marks First Year of North Suffolk LocationSuffolk, VA - July 6, 2009 -
One year after opening, Sentara BelleHarbour
finds its location and available medical expertise has caught the attention of local residents in the tri-city area of Suffolk, Chesapeake and Western Branch. Sentara staff and partnering physicians touched the community in over 27,500 outpatient visits and another 16,000 office visits since the campus opened in June 2008.
“We’ve been really pleased with the community’s response to our services and that has been reflected in our numbers,” says Robert Firestone, director of Sentara BelleHarbour. “Use of the services exceeded all our projections, especially with regard to the emergency department. It has really taken off.” Emergency Department outpaces expectations
The 24-hour a day, seven-day a week emergency department has grown in the number of visits per day each month which Firestone attributes to increased public awareness and especially the high quality of service provided by the experienced staff and the physicians affiliated with Emergency Physicians of Tidewater
.Campus is devoted to health and wellness
The facility has more than 100 staff members providing a broad range of services. In addition to the emergency department, Sentara BelleHarbour offers laboratory services and advanced imaging featuring a 40-slice CT scanner, MRI, digital mammography, bone density, digital x-ray and ultrasound. For the business community, Occupational Medicine
offers pre-employment physicals and non-urgent medical care to the business community surrounding the Sentara BelleHarbour campus. This is complemented by the BelleHarbour Therapy Center
which features physical and occupational therapy services and treats patients of all age groups, from young athletes with sport- related injuries to persons who may have suffered a stroke or have had recent surgery. The Sleep Disorders Center
relocated to Sentara BelleHarbour from its Churchland location last fall and continues to offer sleep studies close to home for the residents of the tri-city area.
With the click of a mouse, patient and physician communication reached new heights.
“We launched MyChart
technologies soon after our move to the Sentara BelleHarbour campus.” Dr. James Waddy, a family practice physician with Sentara Family Medicine Physicians
explained. “Our goal was to provide our patients with quicker access to us and to their personal health information. This technology gives our patients convenience and information on their schedule, not ours.”
Now, office hours no longer dictate when you can communicate with the physicians and staff. MyChart offers the flexibility of 24/7 access and empowers the patient to advocate for their personal health. It is a web-based personal electronic medical record that allows patients to review their personal test results, request a prescription renewal, schedule appointments, or e-mail non-urgent questions to the physician for a response.
“I just love the service for myself and my parents,” says Emma Bellinger, a patient and caregiver for her parents. “With a few keystrokes, anytime day or night, I can log-on to our personal health records to review lab results, request a prescription or an appointment, even send an e-mail to my doctor with a question. It makes my life so much easier!” Looking ahead
With so much to celebrate in its first year, the leadership at Sentara BelleHarbour is hardly slowing down. Program development and bringing additional physician specialists to the community are key focus areas for the campus moving forward.
“We continue to embrace innovative ways to improve health every day and ways we can grow and improve our current offerings to deliver the best health care to the community,” says Firestone. “We value our partnership with the residents and seek their input as we grow together.”
