Event: June 28 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Sentara Cancer Network hosts internationally recognized leader in breast conservation therapy and co-principal investigator of the TARGiT trial Michael Baum. During the national symposium, Professor Baum will share safety and efficacy findings of the international breast cancer study with Virginia physicians.

The TARGiT trial is an international, randomized clinical study for early breast cancer patients who meet trial criteria. The purpose of the TARGiT trial, which stands for TARGeted Intraoperative-radiation Therapy (TARGiT), is to evaluate the effectiveness of a single dose of radiation given during surgery to remove breast cancer compared to the standard treatment of 6-8 weeks of external radiation therapy.

Baum, Professor Emeritus of Surgery at University College London was instrumental in developing the technique for delivering radiation in surgery used in the TARGiT trial.

Sentara Cancer Network Physicians at Sentara CarePlex Hospital are among those at 7 leading U.S. centers who have enrolled patients in the TARGiT trial. This study is offered at 28 locations in nine countries worldwide, and Sentara CarePlex Hospital has been involved in TARGiT trial since 2008.
