Giving Back: Sentara Community Benefits Report August 2010 

From Funding Counseling Services to Supporting a Shelter for Women, Sentara Fulfils its Commitment to the Community

NORFOLK, VA (July 19, 2010) - Ten years ago, Jessica Sandlin was adjusting to life as a divorced mother with five children and wanted a counselor with a faith perspective.

She discovered Tidewater Pastoral Counseling Services (TPCS), which has received a $15,000 grant from Sentara, and her family used the service over several years. Sandlin says working with a pastoral counselor provided just the foundation she and her children needed.

"I have met some wonderful traditional counselors, but at Tidewater Pastoral Counseling Services, their background and training allows them to jump in and help you move forward right away," Sandlin said. "Here I saw there was a map for my family for the future."

Sentara's grant to Tidewater Pastoral Counseling Services, which has 10 locations on the southside of Hampton Roads, is just one example of how Sentara supports agencies serving the uninsured, underinsured and vulnerable citizens of the Hampton Roads community.
