Sentara Senior Services to offer free tai chi classes on September and October in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake.
During tai chi, participants use slow, gentle motions while breathing deeply. It is a low-weight bearing exercise. Tai chi has many different styles, but all involve slow, relaxed, graceful movements, each flowing into the next.
The body is in constant motion, and posture is important. The names of some of the tai chi movements evoke nature (e.g., "Embrace Tiger, Return to Mountain"). Individuals practicing tai chi must also concentrate, putting aside distracting thoughts; and they must breathe in a deep and relaxed, but focused manner. Health benefits of tai chi include:
- Improve muscle strength, coordination and flexibility
- Improve balance, decrease risk of falls
- Ease pain and stiffness
- Improve sleep
- Improve overall wellness.
