Community Health Accreditation Program Gives Sentara High Marks in Home Care
Chesapeake, VA (July 21, 2011) – Sentara Home Care has received national accreditation through the Community Health Accreditation Program (CHAP). CHAP is an independent accrediting body designed to inspire community healthcare organizations to achieve organizational excellence and compliance with state and federal regulations.

The rigorous process included a week-long survey of home health, hospice, home infusion, home medical equipment and home respiratory care services in addition to meeting with patients and staff to assess quality of care.
Survey of the five home care business lines involved compliance with thousands of CHAP standards specific to each service. Sentara’s Home Care survey resulted in 99.6 percent compliance. Here are some of the areas CHAP examines:
The quality of services and products, such as clinical practices, access to care, medications, coordination of care, performance improvement and patient safety
Appropriate staff for the workload, financial management of the organization, and management of the facilities
Patient satisfaction, including interviews with patients regarding their care and accompanying staff on visits to patient homes
Long term viability of the organization
“The staff did a great job informing the surveyors and doing what they do best — providing quality, compassionate care to patients in Virginia and northeastern North Caroline--day in and day out,” says Ray Darcey, president, Sentara Enterprises.
“But most of all our patients benefit from knowing our staff and therapies meet the industry’s highest nationally recognized standards of excellence,” he concluded.
CHAP accreditation helps patients choose home health services that have demonstrated excellence in home health services. It also assures patients that the services, operations and practices have been reviewed for their quality and excellence
