River Pavilion, Emergency Department will be public entry points at night; Sentara Heart Hospital, Kaufman lobbies to be locked at 8 p.m.
NORFOLK, VA (April 28, 2011) – Starting on Tuesday, May 3, 2011, Sentara Norfolk General Hospital will lock the doors of the Kaufman lobby on the east side of the campus and Sentara Heart Hospital entrances nightly at 8 p.m.
River Pavilion, on west side of the campus, and the emergency department, will be the entry points during the overnight hours.
Visitors to the hospital in the evening will be asked to sign in, declare their destination, present a picture ID and wear a visitor badge issued at the information desk in the River Pavilion lobby.
“This is for the safety of our patients, visitors and staff,” says Danny Achterfeld, safety and security manager at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. “Most hospitals lock their doors at night except for their emergency rooms. By welcoming visitors through River Pavilion, we can assure that everyone has a reason to be here and help them get where they’re going.”
River Pavilion lobby will be open and staffed 24 hours a day.
Kaufman lobby will lock at 8 p.m. and open at 5:15 a.m.
Sentara Heart Hospital entry doors will lock at 8 p.m. and open at 5:15 a.m.
Long-term visitors, emergencies will be accommodated
A process is in place to allow family members with long-term patients in the Heart Hospital and Maternity units to access those facilities after hours through entrances other than River Pavilion.
For emergencies, the Kaufman lobby door and Heart Hospital back door will be equipped with remote cameras and intercoms to the Safety & Security Control Center. Nighttime visitors will be encouraged to use outpatient surface parking across from River Pavilion and the Sentara Heart Hospital garage.
