NORFOLK, VA (March 28, 2011) - Seven Sentara hospitals have been recognized in the first ever U.S. News & World Report regional hospital rankings. This newest ranking that analyzes regional geographies of 52 metropolitan areas in the country was designed to help consumers differentiate facilities that may not provide a level of care that is nationally ranked. Providers included on the list may be considered among the nation’s best, or they are high performing in the region they serve. According to U.S. News & World Report, all providers included in the list demonstrate a strong record of high performance for most conditions and procedures in one or more specialties.
For the Hampton Roads region, Sentara Norfolk General Hospital remains the only nationally-ranked hospital and five others are regionally recognized. In addition, Sentara Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge, Virginia was recognized in the Washington, DC metro region rankings.
Sentara hospitals were recognized in more specialties than any other providers in the Hampton Roads region. Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, Sentara Leigh Hospital, Sentara CarePlex Hospital, Sentara Obici Hospital, Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center, and Sentara Potomac Hospital were ranked in 13 of the 16 specialties graded. Those include:
- Heart & Heart Surgery
- Neurology & neurosurgery
- Diabetes & endocrinology
- Ear, nose & throat
- Kidney disorders
While the regional ranking is slightly different, it uses the same methodology as the national ranking. A total of 4,852 U.S. hospitals were broken down into smaller groups by specialty. The top 25 percent of hospitals in each specialty were identified using the scoring methods employed in the national rankings. Out of those 25 percent, hospitals within metropolitan areas with populations of 1 million or more were ranked in their metro area.
U.S. News & World Report will continue to publish its annual Best Hospitals list in July to recognize those providers that are highest ranked in the country. Sentara has been part of that national recognition for 11 years, with consistent top 50 ranking for the Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Heart & Heart surgery program. Additional specialties such as orthopedics, kidney disease and urology have also been included in the past.
