Norfolk SharX and Virginia Beach Piranhas Access Sentara Sports Medicine

Norfolk, VA (June 28, 2011) - Sentara Sports Medicine experts collaborate with professional soccer teams to offer on- and off-field sports assessment and injury prevention to the Norfolk SharX professional and Virginia Beach Piranhas PRO AM soccer teams.

Nearly six dozen professional and PRO/Am soccer players are under the watchful eyes of Sentara Sports Medicine experts during practice and games. Physical therapists, exercise physiologists, certified athletic trainers, registered dieticians, and a network of primary care physicians, orthopedic surgeons, imaging experts and emergency physicians offer complete sports medicine care to athletes.

The latest diagnostic imaging like CT, MRI and other advanced technologies aids in fast diagnoses and treatment to get players back on the field and in to play.

Sentara Sports Medicine also collaborates with local experts providing concussion management along with an array of other health care services throughout Hampton Roads.

“We are thrilled to have this depth of sports medicine and athletic training expertise through Sentara Sports Medicine. Sentara offers complete sports medicine care for our athletes from injury prevention and immediate sideline assessments to imaging and treatment,” says Marcie Laumann, president and general manager, Virginia Beach Piranhas and Norfolk SharX Pro Soccer.

“This represents the perfect collaboration between two organizations who believe in the health benefits of athletics," said Alan Wilson, Director of Sentara Therapy Centers. “Our goal is to help the SharX and Piranhas maximize their competitive advantage and fitness while encouraging other area young adults and children to consider healthy lifestyles,” continued Wilson.

“We have complete confidence in Sentara athletic training and rehabilitation services and appreciate the network of sports medicine experts exactly where we play—in Norfolk and at the new Sentara Princess Anne health campus,” offered Laumann.

The Sentara Sports Medicine Program delivers the full continuum of services to all level athletes. From injury prevention and diagnosing sports-related injuries using some of the area’s most advanced imaging capabilities to treating musculoskeletal injuries, rehabilitation, the Sentara Sports Medicine Program is built on the expertise of a multidisciplinary team.

Radiologists specialized in reading images for specific body parts partner with family sports medicine physicians and orthopedic surgeons to identify the extent of injury. A complete orthopedic rehabilitation team of therapists, physicians, nurses, athletic trainers and administrative staff also provides care to more than 25,000 patients each year from 25 locations in the Hampton Roads region.
