Latest Report Rates Safe Care Across 26 Measures
Norfolk, VA (November 2012) – In the latest industry report released today by The Leapfrog Group, all seven Sentara hospitals in the area earned top marks for patient safety. More than 2,600 U.S. participating hospitals were assigned a letter grade to represent the Hospital Safety Scoresm as a tool for consumers to better understand the quality of providers.
When less than half of Virginia hospitals earned top marks for safety in the care environment, Sentara hospitals from Williamsburg to Virginia Beach earned the highest grade of “A” for delivering safe care to patients. In Virginia, less than half (41 percent) of the 58 participating hospitals earned the top score.
"Keeping our patients safe while they are in our care is a top priority at Sentara," says Gene Burke, MD, Sentara vice president of clinical effectiveness.
"We are honored to achieve such high marks and yet our call is to remain constant to the effort of improving care for our patients every day,” Burke continues.
The Hospital Safety Score is based on recent publicly available data for 26 patient safety measures. Developed by The Leapfrog Group, the intent of this grade is to help patients and their families more easily interpret how safe the nation’s hospitals are. The score is a composite of weighted measures which are combined to produce a single, consumer-friendly score published as a letter grade.
