Norfolk, Va. (July 13) – Sentara Healthcare announced today that Elwood B. Boone III, FACHE, has been named president at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital effective Wed., August 15. Boone replaces Dr. Ray Troiano who retired in April. Dr. Thomas Thames, vice president for medical affairs at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, had served as interim president since Dr. Troiano’s retirement.
“Since April, Tom Thames, MD has effectively guided Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital as interim president and I would like to publicly thank him. We are most appreciative of his willingness to step forward and assist the organization. After a national search, Bernie Boone was selected to take the helm as president of the hospital. Boone has served as president of multiple hospitals over a 16-year career with the Hospital Corporation of America (HCA). We look forward to him joining the Sentara family and making significant contributions at Sentara’s Virginia Beach flagship facility,” said Michael V. Gentry, Sentara Corporate VP for the Southside.
Boone began his tenure with Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) in 1996 and most recently served as the chief executive officer for HCA Metropolitan Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, TX. In this position, his duties included management responsibility for $217 million in net revenue and 1,100 employees for a 331-bed HCA Level E hospital. Boone led a master facility planning process and a successful capital funding request that resulted in economic incentives of $44.6 million and $2.2 million from the city of San Antonio for an expansion project on the hospital campus and the successful consolidation of the behavioral health services with Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital that took place in September of 2010.
Boone received the master of health services administration degree from The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and obtained his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Ga. He holds professional certifications or designations as Board Certified in Health Care Management and a Fellow, American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). He is a member of the National Association of Health Services Executives (NAHSE), the Rotary Club of San Antonio, and the Federation of American Hospitals (Hospital Leadership Committee) among others.
Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital is an acute care facility which specializes in cardiology and cardiac surgery, cancer care, orthopedics and neurosciences, with an accredited stroke center and dedicated nursing wing for stroke treatment, total joint replacements and thoracic and colorectal surgery. It is also the region’s only Level III trauma center.
