“Welcome! Good morning!” sang Nelda Booker, RN, director of patient care services as the first cars arrived. With an orange safety vest over her white lab coat, Booker was checking cars for the red stickers required for employees’ cars.
“Yay!” shouted one employee, pumping her fist as she passed through the entrance, parking on-site for the first time in almost a year. Sentara Leigh employees have been parking at a former car dealership’s lot and riding shuttles since the garage project began on top of the former surface parking for employees.
“I appreciate the patience and support of our employees while the garage was under constuction,” says Teresa Edwards, president of Sentara Leigh Hospital. “They’re the backbone of patient care and customer service and this new garage will make parking for work safer and more convenient.”
The new garage is a milestone in the four-year Sentara Leigh Hospital patient tower replacement project. The steel framing of the first five-story patient tower is rising above the parking deck and existing hospital. As dawn broke, a diesel engine growled to life on the construction site as a crane operator prepared to remove steel beams from a flatbed tractor-trailer.
The Sentara Leigh Hospital project includes two new patient towers flanking a large healing garden and a two-story atrium entrance leading to new outpatient facilities, education spaces and other services, due for completion in 2016.
