Sentara Appoints Vice President for Oncology Services

Norfolk, Va. (November 2012) – Sentara Healthcare announced today that Cynthia Allen, BSN has been named to the new position of vice president of oncology services effective January 7, 2013. Currently, Allen serves as the executive director for business and clinical development for Cancer Centers of Virginia and works closely with the Sentara Cancer Network.

As vice president of oncology services, Allen will be responsible for providing direction and support for the oncology services at Sentara in partnership with key division personnel, hospital administrative teams and physicians. Additionally, she has responsibility for working with key stakeholders to refine the vision for the Sentara Cancer Network focused on improving cancer care in the region, assessing current capabilities and service inventory, and bringing stakeholders together to develop consensus and alignment on priorities and work plans.

Allen began her tenure with Sentara Healthcare in 2001 when she served as the director of radiation oncology services. She assumed her current position of executive director for Business and Clinical Development for Cancer Centers of Virginia in 2006. Prior to these positions, she worked for Tidewater Healthcare and held several positions including director of oncology services at Virginia Beach General Hospital and nurse manager at Virginia Beach General Hospital.

“This position allows Sentara to more effectively align oncology services with patient, physician and other professional healthcare staff needs. The vice president of oncology services will work closely with physicians and other stakeholders to develop strategic plans and goals. Cynthia Allen is well suited to assume the helm because of her educational background in nursing, business acumen and years of experience in radiation and oncology services,” said Michael V. Gentry, Corporate Vice President, Southside.

Allen received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing in 1991 from the Medical College of Virginia. She is pursuing the MBA at Regent University, School of Global Leadership & Entrepreneurship. She holds professional memberships in the Society for Radiation and Oncology Administrators; Association for Cancer Care Executives, Virginia Nurses Association, Association of Community Cancer Centers and the Virginia Cancer Coalition.
