Hampton, Va., (December 19, 2012) –Sentara CarePlex Hospital celebrates 10 years of community service on the Peninsula, a milestone shared with its outpatient health campus Sentara Port Warwick, which also opened to patients in 2002.

Both facilities have shown growth in areas of community need. Sentara CarePlex Hospital is the second busiest emergency department in Virginia serving thousands of area residents annually. Over the last decade, the hospital has added cancer resources to support the growth of the Sentara Cancer Network on the Peninsula. In turn, the hospital is now serving an increased number of radiation oncology patients. Services have been added to enhance care to the area’s aging population. Nurses at Sentara CarePlex Hospital are now specially trained to meet the care needs of seniors, and the hospital gained a national certification known as Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE). This summer the hospital opened a 12-bed Acute Care for Elders (ACE) unit.  On the Sentara Port Warwick campus, services like advanced vascular services have been added to better meet the health needs of patients with diabetes and vascular disease.

Regional Asset Vital to the Health of the Community

Over 10 years, Sentara Port Warwick and Sentara CarePlex Hospital have made significant contributions to improving health of Peninsula residents, regardless of their ability to pay. Since 2002, patients at Sentara CarePlex Hospital and Sentara Port Warwick have been provided more than $171 million in uncompensated care.

“Our medical staff and team have become part of this community by giving of their time and talents over the years. We’ve offered free drug take back services and discount flu shots. By knowing this community personally, we’ve enhanced services on both campuses to better serve our neighbors,” says Debra Flores president of Sentara CarePlex Hospital.

Services offered at both campuses have been shaped by the changing health needs of the lower Peninsula.  Sentara invested $22 million to build the Orthopaedic Hospital at Sentara CarePlex the area’s only dedicated orthopedic hospital serving the needs of seniors and aging sports enthusiasts.  Sentara also opened the Advanced Vascular Treatment Center and Wound Care Center including hyperbaric oxygen therapy services at Sentara Port Warwick to serve a largely aging population.

Cutting Edge Technology Raising the Bar of Healthcare

By enhancing its electronic medical record called Sentara eCare®, Sentara CarePlex Hospital is making possible improvements in communications with families and patients.  A “smart room technology” at the hospital relies on data from eCare where all inpatient treatments, procedures, or tests expected to last more than 30 minutes are scheduled. What’s new is that patients and families are now informed of those “appointments” and can plan their stay and involvement in care.

Over the last 10 years, more advanced procedures have come to the Peninsula. For example, cancer patients of the Sentara Cancer Network are offered services at the hospital like heated chemotherapy, single-dose intraoperative-radiation therapy to treat breast cancer, and an advanced whipple procedure for pancreatic cancer patients. Surgeons at Sentara CarePlex Hospital also offer minimally invasive natural orifice procedure to remove select rectal tumors that would traditionally require a more involved and invasive surgery. Most recently Sentara invested in a new 3T MRI, an advanced technology to help diagnose patients.

Exceptional Outcomes

Sentara CarePlex Hospital has been a leader, raising the bar of health care on the Peninsula by gaining quality and safety certifications over their history. In the most recent industry survey, Sentara CarePlex Hospital earned the top rating for Hospital Safety by Leapfrog, an independent national nonprofit initiating quality and safety improvements in health care. Sentara CarePlex Hospital gained stroke center certification by proving its capabilities of providing timely and lifesaving care to stroke patients. The hospital gained chest pain center certification and accreditation as a weight loss surgery center of excellence, while the Dorothy G. Hoefer Comprehensive Breast Center at Sentara Port Warwick gained national accreditation as a comprehensive breast center, to name a few of achievements over the last 10 years.

Going Forward

Sentara CarePlex Hospital and Sentara Port Warwick have dozens of major accomplishments to celebrate over the last decade—from bringing new services and advances in care to Peninsula residents to gaining national recognitions. True to form this Peninsula team will continue to focus on enhancing the services it provides the community.

“We will continue working with our medical staff and clinicians to understand what is needed by this community. That closeness will help us continue enhancing the programs that matter most in this area,” Flores adds.
