Norfolk, VA (October 1, 2012) – The next time you wake up on a Saturday morning to discover that your cold has morphed into a major sinus infection, there’s a new option for care – and you can take advantage of it from home.
Sentara MDLIVE launches October 1, allowing residents of Virginia to see a doctor when and where it’s convenient for them – yes, even in the middle of the night, on holidays and weekends.
Sentara Healthcare partnered with MDLIVE to use the latest technology to allow consumers and physicians to engage in real time, interactive consultations.
Participating physicians are board-certified and Virginia-licensed and are available 24 hours a day to diagnose, recommend treatment and prescribe medication when appropriate. Quality Sentara physicians are expanding this network in the coming months.
Who should consider a virtual visit?
These virtual consults are a convenient alternative to traditional care for non-emergency care. SENTARA MDLIVE can be used for:

Patients considering the ER or urgent care center for a non-emergency.
People traveling and in need of medical care.
What type of illness does a virtual visit cover?
Treatment for a variety of non-emergency medical concerns is available. Some examples include:

to conduct a virtual visit.
Visits take place by online video or a secure telephone line. Virtual visits don’t replace traditional face-to-face health care, but complement it and provide a convenient option when traditional care is not easily available.
How much does it cost?
Sentara MDLIVE visits are $45 and payment is collected at the time of the visit.
Some health insurance plans offer reduced co-pays for virtual visits. To find out if your plan offers a discounted co-pay, be sure to check with them before signing up for the service.
Do virtual visits include prescriptions?
Yes, if a prescription is needed, the Sentara MDLIVE physician will send an electronic prescription to the pharmacy of your choice. If for any reason your pharmacy is unable to receive e-prescriptions, a traditional prescription is generated for the physician to sign and fax.
Is it safe?
Sentara MDLIVE is compliant with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and will only share your information with your selected member physician and pharmacy.
