Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital Administrator Retires

Virginia Beach, Va. (January 4, 2012) – Sentara Healthcare announced today that Dr. Raymond Troiano, president of Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, will retire effective April 6, 2012. “Dr. Troiano has served as a practicing neurologist in the region since 1977 and assumed responsibility as the hospital’s chief administrator position in 2006. He has served with honor and distinction both as an administrator and as a member of the medical staff,” said Michael Gentry, corporate vice president for the Southside. Sentara will immediately begin its recruitment process to fill the vacant administrator position.

Among Dr. Troiano’s accomplishments, achieved in conjunction with other members of the Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital leadership team and members of the medical staff include:

• Development of the Multi-disciplinary Stroke Program
• Creation and implementation of the Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospitalist Program
• Creation and implementation of the Sentara Virginia Beach General Critical Care Program (only hospital in region with 24/7 in-house coverage by Board Certified Critical Care Medicine Specialists)
• Creation and implementation of the Sentara Virginia Beach General Palliative Care Program
• Successful implementation of the Sentara Virginia Beach General Inpatient Rehabilitation Program
• Development of the Sentara Virginia Beach Breast Cancer program in conjunction with Sentara Princess Anne and Sentara Independence
• Creation of the Medical Staff Quality Committee and Hospital Quality and Safety Committee
• Joint Commission Disease-Specific Certification in stroke, acute myocardial infarction, and Heart Failure
• Society of Chest Pain Centers Certification as a Chest Pain Center with PCI (first in Sentara)
• Achieved NAPBC (National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers) accreditation of the Sentara Virginia Beach Breast Cancer Program

Dr. Troiano is also responsible for Sentara Virginia Beach General being the first community hospital in the state of Virginia to implement Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and for Sentara Virginia Beach General being the first hospital in the region and third in state to acquire O-arm technology for complicated spine surgery. During his 35-year career, he has previously served as vice president for medical affairs at Sentara Virginia Beach General (1998); chairman of the Board Coastal Health Services (1998-2002); president of the medical staff Sentara Virginia Beach General (1993); president of the Virginia Beach Medical Society (1992); chairman, Division of Neurosciences SVBGH (1988-1989, and 1992); chairman, Department of Internal Medicine (1980-1981); practicing neurologist (1977-1998) and a volunteer neurologist at the Beach Health Clinic (1999-present).

In addition to serving in leadership capacities in the Sentara Healthcare system, he has held leadership and membership roles in several professional and community organizations including the Hampton Roads Physicians Organization, VISION 2000 Steering Committee (a hospital wide performance improvement project), Medical Advisory Committee for the Tidewater Multiple Sclerosis Society, the American Academy of Neurology, president of the Booster Club at Cape Henry Collegiate School and a member of the Board of the Virginia Beach Crime Solvers.

Dr. Troiano has also received several awards and recognitions including:

• John J. Krueger Physician of the Year (2002)
• Annual Guest Lecturer of the Year Award (First Colonial Family Practice -1980) and the
• Kings Grant Athletic Association Coach of the Year (1985)
