October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Here are our top 10 ways you can raise awareness, bring hope to current patients, and help protect yourself or the women in your life.

10. Be Inspired by October
Hundreds of pink quilt squares inscribed with messages of hope during the 2011 Home-A-Rama have been made into Quilts of Courage. In October, be inspired by viewing these lovely works of art and hope at several Sentara hospitals across Hampton Roads.

9. Share a Message of Hope
At Sentara Hampton Roads Hospitals, write a message of hope on a post card in October to be delivered to someone battling breast cancer right now. Writing locations are open at several Hampton Roads hospitals.

8. Check Out Super Saturday Mammos
Saturday appointments are available for mammography at the Dorothy G. Hoefer Comprehensive Breast Center at Sentara Port Warwick in Newport News October 6, 13, 20, and 27. Call (757) 594-1899 for an appointment for screening mammogram.

7. Join the Conversation
Like the Get Pink with Sentara page on Facebook. Keep up with all of the latest Get Pink events, hear from our breast health experts, and connect with others supporting breast cancer awareness.

6. Know Your Risks of Breast Cancer
Obesity can increase risks for breast cancer in post menopausal women, according to recent research, among other factors. The American Cancer Society offers information on what puts you at risk.

5. Race for a Cure
Run or walk on October 13 at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. The Hampton Roads Regional Event will be held at Virginia Beach Oceanfront. Team Sentara will be walking and sharing information at a display booth.

4. Check out the Get Pink House, October 13 - 28
Check out the Get Pink with Sentara House at Home-A-Rama in Norfolk’s East Beach community. The truly pink house, sponsored by Sentara, aims at raising community awareness for the importance of breast health.

3. Confirm your mammogram is done using digital mammography
Data suggests digital mammography is more effective for women with dense breasts and the images are easier to compare each year. All Sentara Hampton Roads mammography units are digital.

2. Learn
If you’ve been newly diagnosed with breast cancer, attend an information session on October 29 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Sentara Heart Hospital Conference Room 1. Topics include discussions about diagnosis, treatment options and support. Register with a nurse navigator at (757) 388-0221.

1. Get Your Mammogram
The number one way to get your pink on in October is to get your annual mammogram. You are your own best advocate. Take charge of your breast health by having your annual mammogram and following guidelines from the American Cancer Society. Schedule your own special event - request your annual screening mammogram today.
