Diabetes Management Program

The Outpatient Diabetes Management Program at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center is recognized by the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) for quality patient education. Education is the cornerstone of our program. Self-management skills are essential survival skills that can help you avoid or delay the complications of disease. Because staying healthy can be challenging, we offer a number of ways to make it a little easier.

Diabetes Management Classes

Taught by our staff of certified diabetes educators, who are also registered nurses and registered dietitians, our Diabetes Management classes provide practical advice on nutrition, medications, achieving better blood glucose control, hygiene, sick day management, community resources, techniques for combating stress and exercise. An individual pre-assessment and follow-up consultation are included. This program is designed to compliment your doctor’s care.

Prediabetes Education Program

The American Diabetes Association defines prediabetes as blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Our Prediabetes Education Program includes a two-hour group class aimed specifically at assisting those with prediabetes in adopting healthy lifestyle changes to prevent the onset of diabetes. Taught by a team of certified diabetes educators, the program includes a free glucometer and a 30-minute individual follow-up session with a diabetes educator.

Gestational Diabetes Management

This two-hour program is offered once a week for women diagnosed with diabetes during pregnancy and is taught by certified diabetes educators.

Insulin Pump Program

This comprehensive program is for people with diabetes who are using or will be starting insulin pump therapy. Taught by certified diabetes educators who are specially trained in pump therapy instruction, this program includes how to use and maintain an insulin pump, plus important information about nutrition, carbohydrate counting, exercise, and sick day, hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia management.

Diabetes Support Group

Our Diabetes Support Group meets monthly and provides a friendly and supportive environment to share information and achievements, hear guest speakers and discuss concerns.

Accredited by the American Association of Diabetes Educators. Registration for the diabetes management programs is required.
