Sentara Northern Virginia Comprehensive Breast Center is dedicated to prevention, early detection and treatement of breast cancer. Our mobile mammography van travels to community sites to provide state-of-the-art digital mammography services including computer-aided detection. Our services are made possible by a $750,000 grant from the Potomac Health Foundation.
On the mammography van, care is provided to patients who are uninsured on a prorated basis. Insurance is billed for patients who have coverage. A physician’s referral is not required for your annual screening mammogram.
In the Prince William County area there is a lack of early detection and treatment of breast cancer, particularly for low income women, leading to a high rate of deaths from breast cancer. Data indicate that the cancers are detected at a late, more serious stage, which signifies the need for improved early detection and treatment.
The mammography van will improves access to mammography screening services for women and links patients with necessary follow up diagnosis and treatment services. The van also has an exam room for a variety of women’s health issues, including well women exams and health education and counseling.
By offering women the option of a mobile unit coming to their employer or other locations near their home, women can more easily set aside the time for this important screening tool. Annual mammograms are recommend for women age 40 and older.
