Sentara Northern Virginia Comprehensive Breast Center is dedicated to the prevention, early detection and treatment of breast cancer. Our mobile mammography van travels to community sites throughout Northern Virginia to provide state-of-the-art digital mammogram services including computer-aided detection. Our services are made possible by a $750,000 grant from the Potomac Health Foundation.
In the Prince William County area, there is a lack of early detection and treatment of breast cancer, particularly for low-income women, leading to a high rate of deaths from breast cancer. Data from this study indicates that women with breast cancer in these areas are detected at a late, more serious stage, which signifies the need for improved early detection and treatment.
The mammography van will improve access to mammography screening services for women and links patients with necessary follow up diagnosis and treatment services. The van also has an exam room for a variety of women’s health issues, including well women exams and health education and counseling.
Mobile Mammography Cost
On the mammography van, care is provided to patients who are uninsured on a prorated basis. Insurance is billed for patients who have coverage. If you are over 40, a physician's referral is not required for your annual screening mammogram; however, you will be required to provide your physician contact information.
By offering women the option of a mobile unit coming to their employer or other locations near their home, women can more easily set aside the time for this important screening tool. Annual mammograms are recommended for women ages 40 and older. Please contact Yvonne Barber at 703-523-1997 for more information and to schedule the mobile mammography van in your area.
