Tuesday, October 23, marked the sixth session of the Courage F.U.N. (Fitness, Understanding Health & Nutrition) Project at Marumsco Hills Elementary School. This pilot program is a collaboration between Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center, Prince William Courage, Sodexho, and Prince William County Schools as a way to combat the childhood obesity epidemic, specifically in Prince William County.
Forty fourth and fifth graders participate weekly to learn new soccer skills from Prince William Courage coaches and about healthy living and eating from Sentara healthcare professionals. Sentara provides wellness instruction as well as support with measuring fitness goals. Students participate in height, weight and body fat measurements and complete fitness challenges that complement those utilized in their Health & Physical Education classes. This allows the students, parents and coaches to celebrate the positive changes gained through participation in the program.
A new soccer/fitness skill and wellness topic are covered each week after school. The children also use workbooks to reinforce healthy behavior and encourage parent participation at home. The Courage F.U.N. partners are hopeful that this pilot program will result in the ability to expand to other schools in Prince William County.
As you can see by all the smiles, these kids were having FUN!
