Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center has achieved national accreditation and primary stroke center certification from DNV Healthcare, the only hospital accreditation program approved by the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) that integrates the ISO 9001 Quality Management System with the Medicare Conditions of Participation. DNV’s NIAHOR accreditation program requires hospitals to evaluate the continuum of patient care throughout its facilities and take measured steps to improve when it is warranted.

“The DNV accreditation program is in line with our commitment to patient safety and quality,” says Megan Perry, president of Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center. “Integrating ISO 9001 quality standards with our clinical and financial processes will allow us to continually improve our services and make sure we provide the best possible care to our patients.”

DNV hospital accreditation addresses the demands of today’s hospitals dedicated to patient-centered care. As part of the accreditation process, DNV surveyors will visit Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center annually instead of every three years as was done previously. They monitor the hospital’s adherence to patient safety criteria established by CMS, but also evaluate processes that impact patient care across various departments and facilities of the hospital.

Being accredited by DNV allows Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center to receive reimbursement for its patients covered by Medicare and Medicaid. The DNV NIAHOR accreditation program was authorized by CMS in 2008 and today DNV provides not only hospital accreditation but also Primary Stroke Center Certification. Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center will have three years to become compliant with the ISO 9001:2008 standards in order to maintain its accreditation with DNV.
