WOODBRIDGE, Va. (October 28, 2013) – Sentara Healthcare recently launched state-of-the-art 3D mammography technology for early diagnosis of breast cancer at its Lake Ridge location. The 3D mammography service, also known as breast tomosynthesis, creates three dimensional images of the breast to provide doctors with a clearer view of the breast tissue and increase cancer detection. Patients can access the new 3D mammography and other breast imaging options by calling (703) 523-1560.

“The addition of 3D mammography is one of biggest breakthroughs in mammography in the last 30 years,” says Tina Banson, M.D., fellowship trained Sentara mammographer. “It’s allowing us to see cancers we wouldn’t otherwise see,” she adds.

The two dimensional images produced through traditional mammography are similar to an x-ray, which make it difficult to find small cancers concealed by layers of breast tissue. The new 3D mammography takes imaging to the next level by creating 3D breast reconstructions that enable radiologists to view the breast in very thin layers. These individual images of each layer of breast tissue reveal abnormalities and early cancers that may not be visible using other mammography services. While available to all women, the 3D technology may be particularly useful for detecting cancer in women with dense breast tissue or who have a family history of breast cancer and are considered to be high risk.

A recent study published in the June 2013 issue of the American Journal of Roentgenology (AJR) found the use of 3D mammography increased cancer detection by 35 percent and increased invasive cancer detection by 53 percent. The study of 13,856 women also showed that the number of times women were called back for more images was reduced by 38 percent. Most often, when women are called back, no cancer is found.

Further research being published nationwide continues to increase the body of knowledge that suggests 3D mammography increases cancer detection rates, while decreasing call back and biopsy rates. “We’re thrilled to bring this new technology to Sentara Lake Ridge and enhance the services we provide to women in the community” states Dr. Banson.

Sentara Lake Ridge is part of the Sentara Northern Virginia Comprehensive Breast Center, which has been designated aBreast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and is also accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC).
