Chaplain Plummer is the Team Coordinator for Chaplaincy Services at Sentara CarePlex. He began his career in chaplaincy as a volunteer nursing home chaplain in 1980. After serving in healthcare, correctional, and active duty and reserve Army chaplaincy, he joined Sentara in 1999.
He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Cincinnati Christian University, and his Master of Divinity degree from United Theological Seminary. He did a chaplaincy internship in Clinical Pastoral Education at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. In 2000, Chaplain Plummer completed a fellowship in biomedical ethics with the Center for Biomedical Ethics at the University of Virginia. Having an interest in research ethics, in 2002 he became the first chaplain to be Certified as an Institutional Review Board Manager with the National Association of IRB Managers. He serves on the Eastern Virginia Medical School IRB and as an Alternate Member of the US Oncology IRB. He serves as the Research Ethics Consultant to the Sentara Center for Healthcare Ethics.
Chaplain Plummer is a Board Certified Chaplain with the Association of Professional Chaplains and a Board Certified Clinical Chaplain (and Psychotherapy Diplomate) with the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy. In 2003 he was elected to the COMISS Network as Secretary, and re-elected in 2005. From 1996 to 2008, he was a member of the Editorial Committee of The Journal of Pastoral Care and Counseling. In 2009, he is elected to the Board of Managers of the journal. Additionally, Chaplain Plummer holds licensure in Virginia as a marriage and family therapist, and is a clinical member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and the Virginia Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. Additionally, he is a medical family therapist member of the Collaborative Family Healthcare Association. In 2002, he accepted appointment as a Commissioner with the COMISS Commission on the Accreditation of Pastoral Services (CCAPS), and was elected Chair in 2004 to 2008. From 2006 to 2011, he served either as the Chaplain Voting Member or the Alternate Member on the Joint Commission’s Professional and Technical Advisory Committee.
Chaplain Plummer is professionally active in the community having served as a past President of the Peninsula Clergy Association, a past Senior Vice Commander of the Hampton Roads Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars. He also serves as a Clinical Site Supervisor with Regent University School of Psychology and Counseling and Old Dominion School of Psychology, as well as a field education supervisor with both Virginia Union University School of Theology and Regent University School of Divinity.

The Chaplaincy Services Department believes in a truly inter-faith approach to chaplaincy. It is composed of over thirty volunteer clergy (both scheduled and on-call) from the community, five associate chaplains, as well as students from two seminaries and two graduate schools of psychology and counseling. In January 2006, a unit of CPSP-accredited CPE was launched with six students and three Supervisors-in-Training. The clinical training program was discontinued in 2008, but is expected to be re-launched in September 2010. Specific religious coverage is available for adherents of all mainline Protestant denominations, as well as Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Jewish, Islamic, Latter Day Saints, Christian Science, Seventh Day Adventist, Jehovah's Witness, Buddhist, Bahai, Hindu, and Wiccan faiths.
