Chaplain Roger Gauthier graduated from Emmanuel College of Christian Ministries in 1982 with a BA in pastoral ministries. He has been ordained since, having served multiple roles in his faith discipline as a Senior Pastor, Minister of Christian Education and Youth Pastor. Losing his hero-mentor dad Roger Sr. who spent many years in public service, the United States Army and law enforcement to lung cancer at age 55, became one of the catalysts of Roger developing a special place in his heart for becoming a servant to the trauma inflicted, grieving, abused, end-of-life patients, homeless and downtrodden.
Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy. Deliver them: rid them from the hand of oppression.
He has been very active in volunteerism having served as a board member of crisis pregnancy, on an American Red Cross Disaster Team, on the Norfolk Planning Council as a Suicide Specialist, on the Portsmouth and Virginia Beach VA Police as a Police Chaplain, within his faith discipline, community, the Samaritan House where his wife Robin serves as the Program Director and 15 months as a pastoral counselor volunteer for the Sentara Hospice Program.
Roger became the first full-time Chaplain and Bereavement Services Coordinator for the Sentara Home Care Services and Hospice Program in July 2000. During his tenure with hospice, Roger served as a grief group facilitator for multiple years and started Sentara’s first online grief support group. He also co-authored with that team “Preparing for the Journey.” He is ecclesiastically endorsed with the Chaplain's Ministries, IPHC, INC. He completed a Bon Secours residency of four units of Level II Clinical Pastoral Education which included pastoral reflection, pastoral formation, pastoral competence and chaplaincy specialization. Certified by the College of Pastoral Psychotherapy and Counseling as an Associate Clinical Chaplain, Roger has worked as a chaplain for Sentara Virginia Beach General since 2006, and is currently completing his Masters in Pastoral Counseling to become eligible for Board Certified Clinical Chaplain.
Roger is honored to serve as chaplain at Sentara Virginia Beach General; one of his capacities is Co-Chair of the hospital’s ethics committee. He also continues to be drawn to end-of-life, the grief-stricken and critical care ministries and staff support.
