The Chaplaincy Services Department consists of the main Chaplaincy Services Office as well as the Chapel and a secondary Chaplaincy Services Office. The main Chaplaincy Services Office is located on the first floor, adjacent to the entry to the Hampton River Medical Building (Building 4000). It is co-located with the Volunteers Office.

The Chapel and a secondary Chaplaincy Services Office is located on the first floor, adjacent to the main lobby, directly in front of the Imaging Department. The department coordinates spiritual screens of all in-patients, provides spiritual assessment of patients upon referral or request or when certain medical triggers are met. The department offers patients and their family members and friends pastoral care.

The department also provides pastoral care to SCH out-patients, Cancer Institute patients, patients at the Sentara Port Warwick facility, and their family members -- as well as Sentara CarePlex Hopsital staff -- by request or referral. The department is staffed by a full-time manager, Chaplain David B. Plummer and five on-call clinical chaplains in addition to over three dozen adjunct chaplains and on-call community clergy representing a very diverse religious spectrum.

Additionally, the department has partnered with Regent University School of Divinity, Virginia Union School of Theology, Regent University School of Psychology and Counseling, and Old Dominion University School of Psychology to allow select graduate students the opportunity for an exposure to pastoral care and counseling within a healthcare setting. In January 2006, the department began a Clinical Pastoral Education program under the auspices of the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy.

It is appropriate to call the department when the patient or family member:

Requests a chaplain or another clergy.
Requests a religious rite or service.
Expresses anxiety or is emotionally distressed.
Expresses concern over death or the quality/meaning of life.
Is concerned about ethical, healthcare, or religious decisions (DNR orders, withdrawal of support, advance directives, refusing treatment for religious reasons, etc.).
Is experiencing difficulty adjusting to illness, injury, or life changes.
Needs preparation and support for first visit to a critical care unit.
Needs emotional or spiritual support at the death of a loved one.

Chaplains are available 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week. During normal business hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the manager generally may be reached at 736-1201, pager SIMON #2031, 881-4985. However for all routine and emergency after-hours pastoral care, contact the Communications Center, 736-1000 to have the appropriate chaplain paged..
