Feature Story A Family’s Generosity Brings a New Breast Center to the Area.
Dr. Richard A. Hoefer said simply, “I’m not aware of a family in the country who hasn’t been affected by breast cancer in some way.” That’s what makes his mother’s donation of $500,000 for the new Dorothy G. Hoefer Comprehensive Breast Center so important.
“It will be a unique center in the area to provide comprehensive breast care where the surgeon, radiologist and nurse navigator all work together in one place and, in consultation with medical oncolo-gists, diagnoses and treatment plans can be expedited. It will allow a patient to know what her situation is sooner,” explained Dr. Hoefer.
Mrs. Dorothy G. Hoefer recognizes that clinical services and research can be very expensive. “She wanted to start some-thing new that provided additional support for these kinds of patients,” said Dr. Hoefer. There is also a family connection. Mrs. Hoefer’s stepsister died of breast cancer when she was just 39. Her sister had it too, and was treated, but died of ovarian cancer.
Dr. Hoefer, a surgical oncologist, will be working at the center with his partners, Dr. Greg Lavalle and Dr. Deborah Martinez. Other surgeons in the community are being encouraged to participate in the center’s high quality clinical services and state-of-the-art facility. Comprehensive diagnostic equipment such as MRI, gamma-specific breast imaging (nuclear medicine), and ultrasound is planned for the first floor, making it convenient for patients. In ad-dition, a variety of minimally invasive or image-guided biopsy pro-cedures will be possible for patients seeking full cancer treatment in one location. These physicians will see patients upstairs where they’ll also have weekly conferences with pathologists, oncologists and other surgeons to go over new patients’ cases.
“Mom turned 92 on October 20th, and I think she felt like she really wanted to leave a legacy. This gift will have a lasting benefit for thousands of women,” said Dr. Hoefer. “She’s a housewife who raised my brother and myself, and she’s just very excited to have this opportunity.”
The Dorothy G. Hoefer Comprehensive Breast Center in Newport News opened April 2007.
