David L. Bernd, Chief Executive Officer
David L. Bernd received his Master of Hospital and Health Administration from the Medical College of Virginia in 1973. He served his residency at Medical Center Hospitals 1972-73. Mr. Bernd served as assistant administrator at Sentara Norfolk General from 1973 until 1979 when he was named administrator. In 1985 Mr. Bernd was named executive vice president/chief operating officer of Sentara Health System and president, Sentara Hospitals Norfolk. In December 1994, he was named president and chief executive officer of Sentara Health System (now Sentara Healthcare).

In 2004 Mr. Bernd, assumed the chairmanship of the American Hospital Association Board of Trustees, making him the top elected official of the largest hospital and health system association in the United States. In addition, he is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives; the Virginia Wesleyan College Board of Trustees. He is past chairman of the United Way of South Hampton Roads Board of Directors, the Virginia Hospital Association Board of Directors, past chairman of the Hampton Roads YMCAs, past member of the VHA, Inc., Board of Directors, past member of the Southtrust Bank Board of Advisors and past member of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce Regional Board. Mr. Bernd was the 1984 recipient of the American College of Hospital Administrators' Robert S. Hudgens National Young Hospital Administrator of the Year Award

Howard P. Kern, President & Chief Operating Officer
Howard Kern currently serves as the President and Chief Operating Officer for Sentara Healthcare, as well as Chief Executive Officer for the hospital division, and Chairman of the Board of Sentara’s Bay Primex insurance division. He has been employed by Sentara Healthcare since 1980.
 Mr. Kern received his Master of Health Administration degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1981; he received an undergraduate degree from the State University of New York in 1978.

Mr. Kern is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He is a member of numerous professional and community organizations. Mr. Kern is a member of the Board of Directors of Sentara Health Plans, Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association, VHA Central Atlantic, Virginia Shared Hospital Services Corporation, and Virginia Health Network. He has previously served on regional boards for the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, Junior Achievement, and Rotary; he is a former member of the Board of the Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine and the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Kern was appointed to the Board of Visitors for Norfolk State University by the Governor of Virginia in 2003; he serves as chairman of that institution’s Finance and Audit Committees, and is a member of the Research & Technology Committee. He is an Affiliate Professor of the Medical College of Virginia, Department of Health Administration.

Gary R. Yates, MD - Chief Medical Officer
Gary R. Yates, MD, is Sentara 's Chief Medical Officer. In that capacity, he is responsible for the clinical effectiveness programs, physician integration efforts, and medical management issues for its 7-hospital system and health plan. A board certified family physician and fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, Dr. Yates is a member of the clinical faculty at the Eastern Virginia Medical School. Dr. Yates joined Sentara in 1996 and has been responsible for developing Sentara's clinical effectiveness and patient safety initiatives. He provided leadership for the quality and patient safety initiatives leading to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital being recognized as the 2004 recipient of the AHA's Quest for Quality Award and Sentara Healthcare being recognized as the 2005 recipient of the John M. Eisenberg Award for Patient Safety and Quality from JCAHO and the National Quality Forum.

He previously served as Chairman, Department of Family and Community Medicine and Chief Quality Officer for Maricopa Health System in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Yates also served three years as a judge for the Arizona Governor’s Award for Quality, as a member of the Executive Committee for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's (IHI) Quality Management Network and as co-chair of IHI's ninth annual Nation Forum on Quality Improvement in Health Care. He currently serves as President of Virginians Improving Patient Care and Safety (VIPCS), the statewide patient safety consortium for Virginia. Dr. Yates was awarded the 2005 Physician Executive Award of Excellence from Modern Physician and the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE).

Douglas M. Thompson, Vice President – Reinventing and Decision Support
Doug Thompson is a graduate of the University of Virginia with a B.S. in accounting; he is a Certified Management Accountant and a graduate of General Electric’s Financial Management Program.  Mr. Thompson is Vice President of Decision Support and Reinventing. He is responsible for Benchmarking, productivity reporting, process improvement efforts and supply chain management. Formerly he was a Vice President with Tidewater Health Care responsible for the development and implementation of THCI’s managed care strategy and the planning and financial analysis functions. He has expertise in reengineering, mergers and acquisitions, and physician profiling. Previously, Mr. Thompson was employed by General Electric as the manager of manufacturing cost analysis and by Volvo Penta Production as the manager of budgets and analysis. He began his career with Virginia Chemicals as a cost accountant/financial analyst.

Mr. Thompson is a Past Chairman of Virginia Health Network. He has served on the board of Operation SMILE and the Finance Committee of Cape Henry Collegiate School. He serves as the Vice Chair of one of the United Way Funding panels. He is a member of the Institute of Management Accountants and the Health Financing Management Association.

Michael M. Dudley, Senior Vice President & President of Sentara Health Plans
Michael M. Dudley is a Senior Vice President of Sentara Healthcare and President of Sentara Health Plans. Sentara Health Plans offers HMO, POS, PPO, and Sentara Behaviorial Health Services to commercial, medicaid and medicare members.

Prior to joining Sentara in 1996, Mr. Dudley served for three years as President of Kaiser Permanente Insurance Company and Vice President of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan for Supplemental Products. He served as President and Regional Manager of Kaiser Permanente's Northeast Region for 7 years and as Medical Center Administrator in Northern California for 8 years.

He received a Bachelor of Arts in English at Brigham Young University and a Master of Science in Health Administration at the University of Colorado where he was the recipient of the Foster G. McGaw Scholarship and Class Valedictorian. He also completed the Executive Management Program at Stanford University.

Mr. Dudley currently serves as Chairman of the Virginia Association of Health Plans, and is on the Board of Directors of America's Health Insurance Plans, the Health Plan Alliance, and Cariten Health Plan. He was appointed by Governor Tim Kaine to the Virginia Health Reform Commission and he has previously served on the Board of Virginia Council for Healthy Communities and the Connecticut HMO Association. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Mary L. Blunt, Vice President and President – LifeCare
Mary Blunt is President of Sentara Life Care and a Corporate Vice President for Sentara Healthcare. She oversees Sentara Life Care Corporation, the long-term care division of Sentara Healthcare, and its seven nursing centers, three assisted living facilities, PACE (Program for All-Inclusive Care of the Elderly), and rehabilitation services. Sentara Life Care offers skilled and rehabilitative nursing care, ventilator care, a specialty Alzheimer’s unit, an adult day care center, and six mobile meal programs that deliver more than 850 meals daily to the at-home elderly.

Ms. Blunt joined Sentara in 1987 and has held several positions within the organization including Vice President of Operations for Sentara Bayside Hospital and Vice President of ARC (Ambulatory, Rehab, Cancer) Operating Center for Sentara Southside Hospitals. As Vice President of ARC, she directed all aspects of operational planning and marketing strategies for the ambulatory, rehabilitation and cancer services.

Ms. Blunt earned her Masters of Health Administration from Washington University School of Medicine in Saint Louis. She earned her B.S. in Physical Therapy from the University of Illinois Medical Center in Chicago. Ms. Blunt serves on the board of directors for the Great Bridge YMCA, Virginia Nursing Home Administrators, and AHA Council for Post Acute Care.

Ms. Blunt was elected to the American Hospital Association's Board of Trustees for a 3 year term starting in January. She also chairs the AHA's Governing Council for Long-Term Care and Rehabilitation.

Kenneth M. Krakaur, Senior Vice President and President – Peninsula Region
Ken Krakaur is president of the Sentara Peninsula Region and Senior Vice President of Sentara Healthcare. During the 12 years prior to the merger of Tidewater Health Care and Sentara, he held various positions including Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President and had departmental responsibilities for information services, management engineering, plant operations, finance, clinical engineering and risk management. Along with his current responsibilities of administering Peninsula operations, he has other departmental responsibilities including risk management and occupational health. He is a graduate of Quinnipiac University in Hampden, Connecticut.

Ken serves on the Board of Directors of Patient First Corporation, Bay Primex, Virginia Beach Ambulatory Surgery Center, Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, FoodBank of the Virginia Peninsula, Hampton Arts Foundation and Center for Excellence in Aging and Geriatric Health (CEAGH). He is a member of the American Society of CPA’s and the New York Society of CPA’s.

Robert L. Graves, Vice President and Administrator, Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center
Bob Graves earned his Masters in Hospital Administration from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO in 1975. He worked as an assistant director of the Alton Oschsner Medical Foundation Hospital in New Orleans, LA for two years. He took a position at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, FL where he served as the Chief Operating Officer of this 750-bed hospital. In 1989, Bob accepted the administrator position at Virginia Beach General Hospital, a subsidiary of Tidewater Health Care. Today, Bob serves as Corporate Vice President of Sentara Healthcare and administrator of Williamsburg Community Hospital.

Bob is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and has served as a Regent for Virginia. He has served as past chairman of the Virginia Beach United Way campaign, past chair of the Sentara Healthcare United Way Campaign and currently serves as a board member of the Williamsburg United Way Board of Diretors. Bob is a past board member of the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association.

Bertram Reese, Vice President & Chief Information Officer
As the Chief Information Officer of Sentara, Mr. Reese’s responsibilities includes developing a highly motivated technical management team with which to administrate the computer and telecommunication functions of Sentara. He is also responsible for development and implementation of the long-term system strategies in conjunction with corporate goals and objectives.

Sentara is an innovator utilizing technology to enhance clinical outcomes. Sentara was the first in the nation to implement eICU a remote monitoring and management system for critical care patients. This technologically advanced life monitoring system has produced a dramatic reduction in intensive care mortality. Named as one of the top wired health care systems since 2000 in Hospitals and Health Networks Sentara is connecting its hospitals, pharmacists, physicians, nurses, radiologists, emergency departments, area long term care providers and medical transportation resources in seamless communication system. Sentara Information Technology ranked 11th in the Best Places to Work by Computer World.

Mr. Reese received his MBA from the University of Utah. For the past 30 years he has served in a senior leadership role for Information Technology in the healthcare industry. He is a full professor to the Medical College of Virginia and given lectures at various universities throughout the country.

Mr. Reese is a member of delegations to the Soviet Republic, South Africa and Japan to discuss the role of technology in the delivery of healthcare. He has been recognized as a local leader of technology in the Hampton Roads community and is a board member of the Hampton Roads Technology Council.

He resides with his family in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Robert A. Broermann, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Robert A. (Rob) Broermann currently serves as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Sentara Healthcare, Virginia's largest healthcare system. Mr. Broermann joined Sentara in 1998 through the merger with Tidewater Health Care, where he had served as Chief Financial Officer since 1993.

Prior to joining Tidewater Health Care, Mr. Broermann was a Senior Audit Manager with Coopers & Lybrand. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Accounting and his MBA from Old Dominion University. He is a CPA and a Fellow in the Healthcare Financial Management Association. Mr. Broermann serves on the Board of the United Way of South Hampton Roads and was the Chair of the 2004 United Way Regional Campaign Committee.


Michael V. Taylor, Vice President, Human Resources
Mike Taylor received his undergraduate degree in business administration at Wingate College in North Carolina in 1984. He completed his Master of Science in business education with a concentration in human resources and education in 1993 from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, NC. Mr. Taylor joined Sentara Healthcare in January 2003.

Mr. Taylor is a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, and has more than 20 years of experience in the health care industry. Before joining Sentara Healthcare, he served as Vice President of Human Resources with Moses Cone Health System in Greensboro, NC, a position he held for almost six years. In this role, he was responsible for comprehensive HR functions serving this health system including its 5 hospitals, 3 nursing homes, two multi-county physician practices, and 16 other subsidiary corporations. Prior to this, he was Director of Human Resources at Wesley Long Community Hospital for 11 years in Greensboro, NC, where helped that organization become known as the Employer of Choice in a competitive market. Mr. Taylor is the past President of the North Carolina Healthcare Human Resources Association. He currently serves on the Board of Hampton Roads Workforce Development, and has previously served on the Boards of YMCA, Kids Voting, Summit Credit Union and Guilford County Schools.

Vicky G. Gray, Vice President, System Development
Vicky G. Gray is the Corporate Vice President of System Development for Sentara Healthcare. She is responsible for strategic planning, marketing and sales, market assessment, product development, corporate communications and the Sentara Health Foundation. Prior to joining Sentara in 1998, she was a strategist for an integrated health system in Virginia Beach directing the systems’ planning and marketing initiatives. This position was enriched by concurrent operations experience, including hospital administration, home health care, ambulatory services, and developing and managing a primary care physician group. Ms. Gray is a fellow in the American College of Health Care Executives. She is a member of Society for Healthcare Strategy and Market Development, Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association, and the Healthcare Strategy Institute. Ms. Gray is a former Chair of the Board of Directors for the United Way of South Hampton Roads and is a volunteer with a local community clinic providing primary care for the uninsured.
