Nursing at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital
Burn Trauma Unit
The Burn Trauma Unit at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is a nine-bed intensive care unit serving patients who have suffered trauma and/or burns. Most patients come as a result of motor vehicle accidents, blunt force trauma, penetrating wounds such as stabbing or gunshot wounds, and falls. This unit also serves as an overflow unit for the sister unit with neurosurgical patients, as well as overflow from the medicine unit.
The unit has a nurse-patient ratio of 2:1 with the ability to provide single patient care as needed. Our team primarily consists of registered nurses, but also has a nursing care partner and an operations coordinator for order entry, supplies and payroll. Each shift is also staffed with a Team Leader who makes assignments and handles bedflow, as well as taking care of the patients. All registered nurses are ACLS certified with a year of beginning their work on the unit. We are proud to note that five of our registered nurses have obtained their CCRN certification.
