Education Department
The Education Department at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital supports the educational development of Nursing Staff as well as conducts Hospital Orientation for all members of the team. Educators also support central education, projects and committees, and patient care units. Our mission statement is: Providing innovative educational opportunities to promote patient and employee safety.

Sentara Core Values are evident in the Education Department’s commitment to patient safety through the Behavior Based Expectation Program, Quality Assurance Initiatives, and Joint Commission Tracer Participation. In addition, the Education Department is involved as a crucial part of the pursuit for nursing excellence, the IMPAACT Project, and the Computer Partnership University.

Staff Development Educators facilitate Day 2 Hospital Orientation, Patient Safety Concepts, and Preceptor Workshop. The department also hosts Annual Skills Week and Semi-Annual Safety Fairs. Educators participate on several Planning Committees and Leadership Committees, helping in Sentara's overall mission: Improving health every day.

The Education Department collaborates with Administrators, Directors, Managers, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nurse Clinicians, clinical staff, and other educators throughout the Sentara Healthcare System to ensure the highest level of professional development opportunities are available. The SNGH Education Department also maintains Approver Status for Virginia Nurses' Association Contact Hours. All Sentara Norfolk General Educators hold Bachelor’s Degrees. Many members of the team possess or are actively pursuing advanced education through specialty certifications, Master’s, and Advanced Practice Degrees
