Staffing Support Services
Staffing Support Services at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is a 24-hour per day office that is staffed with one RN per shift who works to manage a pool of nurses across three hospitals (SNGH, SBH, and SLH) on a shift to shift basis. Schedulers are also covering bedflow operations for the SNGH campus on night shift Monday through Friday and the 7 pm shift on weekends. The staffing office management team is also responsible for the IV team and the safety partner program at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Safety partners are distributed as needed to SNGH on a shift-by-shift basis.
The Staffing Support Scheduler makes shift to shift decisions on placement of RN staff to determine the area of greatest need based on patient acuity and unit staffing patterns on each unit. Safety partners are also distributed based on levels of need, with suicidal patients being a top priority for the system. The staffing office is also currently providing dedicated staff and management support for a 10 to 12 bed overflow unit during the Emergency Department renovations. In a typical month, the staffing office averages provision of 40 FTE’s of RN/LPN support to the three hospitals.
