Nursing at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital

Women’s Health
Women’s Health at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital offers a full range of services for mothers and babies, from the problem-free pregnancy to one that might be high-risk. Our department offers a number of options for the new mother and baby in an LDR (labor, delivery, recovery) concept. The L&D unit includes nine normal private birthing rooms, two high risk birthing rooms, three PACU beds, and three triage/screening rooms. There are also two dedicated operating rooms for C-section deliveries on the unit. In addition, we have 36 special private post-partum rooms to allow mothers the choice of having the baby with them in the room. A 30-bed newborn nursery is available, as well as a 48-bed Special Care Nursery equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology and staffed around the clock by board-certified neonatologists to care for our sickest babies.

Our multidisciplinary team consists of perinatologists, neonatologists, clinical associates (registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, nursing care partners, case managers, respiratory therapists, lactation consultants, clinical specialists, and educators), service associates, administrative associates, bereavement counselor, and managers. Medical and anesthesia clinical coverage is provided twenty-four hours a day.

Women’s Health serves as the high-risk center for the region, and accepts over 650 external transports from outlying hospitals every year. Our goal is to successfully manage both normal and high-risk pregnancies for healthy outcomes for both mother and baby. We are particularly proud of a new program called OB Right, which is a physician-led patient safety initiative program for the care and management of our patients.
