Do opportunities exist for periodic salary increases due to market adjustments and individual performance?
We evaluate our employees’ performance on an annual basis. Employees demonstrating effective and highly effective performance can look forward to annual pay increases. At least once a year, Sentara reviews its salary ranges for all jobs to ensure they are market competitive. When there is a difference between what we pay and the market, an adjustment is made.

What about other opportunities for increasing my salary, like shift differential, and certification pay?
Sentara has highly lucrative shift differentials that are offered to all RNs in our hospitals throughout our system. The shift differential amounts vary by facility, employment status and shift hours. To find out more specific information about our shift differential amounts, please contact one of Sentara's Employment Centers and someone would be happy to supply you with that information.

Also, Sentara pays an additional $1.00/hr to RNs with specialty certification, eg., CCRN certification for RNs working in critical care units. Sentaras nurse managers offer financial assistance to their staff RNs to defray the cost associated with the certification and recertification process.

Does my prospective employer reward employees for their contributions to the overall success of the company?
Sentara offers a variable pay program called Performance Plus to all regular employees who are performing at an effective level and who are not in a special pay program. You can earn up to 5% of your pay by helping Sentara and your division reach important customer satisfaction and financial goals.

Does my prospective employer offer opportunities for career promotion?
Sentara became one of the top healthcare companies in America by acknowledging the talent and potential of our employees. Many of our nurse managers, directors, and vice presidents began their careers with Sentara as staff RNs.

How does my prospective employer invest in the development of RNs?
Sentara invests in the development of our RNs in a number of ways:

Tuition Assistance Program – after only six months of employment with Sentara, you will be eligible for up to $1,300 tuition assistance/year. The longer you work for Sentara, the more tuition assistance/year you can receive.

Professional Nursing Development Program – after three years of continuous service, RNs are eligible for up to $500/year support for attendance of job-related conferences, seminars, and workshop educational offerings.

Internships – Sentara offers Critical Care, Cardiac/Vascular, Operating Room, PACU and Emergency Nursing Internships on a frequent basis. These programs are designed to meet the needs of recent graduates of RN programs as well as those of experienced RNs who are transitioning from other specialty areas.

How competitive is my prospective employer’s benefits package?
It is estimated that most benefits packages are worth 1/3 of an employee’s income and amount to more than just healthcare benefits. Even if a spouse provides healthcare benefits, RNs need their own retirement savings.
Sentara is a market leader in providing a rich benefits package, which includes an outstanding retirement program. Please review our benefits brochure, and contact a nurse recruiter if you have any questions.

What kind of work environment can I expect to be offered by my prospective employer?
Sentara wants our RNs to look forward to coming to work. We recently sought their input and responded by implementing several clinical process improvements to reduce non-nursing functions, reduce time off the unit, and help with difficult vein access. Additionally, nurse-friendly technology such as that seen in computerized documentation at the bedside, state-of-the art beds, and Pyxis make the RN’s job easier.
