Optima Health Plan/Family Care
Sentara founded the region’s first healthcare plan, Optima, in 1984. It has been expanding options for a variety of customers ever since. Optima Health Plan is southeastern Virginia's largest HMO with a provider network of over 2000 physicians, 13 hospitals, convenient urgent care sites and innovative facilities. Sentara Family Care, a Medicaid HMO product underwritten by Optima Health Plan, is the largest Medicaid HMO in Virginia. Sentara Family Care is now offered in 46 counties, reaching the central Virginia area.
Optima was recently rated as the best plan in Virginia according to the “Consumers" Guide to Health Plans,” published by Consumers’ Checkbook, a Washington-based nonprofit organization.
The National Research Corporation named Optima Health Plan a Quality Leader.
For the past five years, Optima’s HMO, POS, PPO and Family Care (Medicaid HMO) rated Excellent status from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). This is NCQA’s highest accreditation status.
Sentara Mental Health Management (SMHM)
A subsidiary of Sentara Healthcare, Sentara Mental Health Management is a state-of-the-art managed mental health company, managing the most appropriate and affordable delivery of mental health and substance abuse services. Sentara Mental Health Management contracts with businesses directly and offers specialized employee assistance and wellness programs across the region.
SMHM was founded in 1989 as an outgrowth of Sentara First Step, a corporation created in response to the nation’s first CHAMPUS mental health managed care project. It provided behavioral health coverage for more than 250,000 military dependents in Virginia.
Currently, close to a million people are covered throughout Virginia and the contiguous areas of Washington, D.C., Baltimore, North Carolina, and West Virginia. Customers include HMO, PPO, and POS health plans, PHOs, and employer groups.
