Pharmacy Residency Programs

Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency

The postgraduate year one pharmacy residency at Sentara Healthcare is an ASHP-accredited, 12-month program in an integrated healthcare facility, designed to expand knowledge-base and expertise in the provision of pharmaceutical care. Our residents will develop their practice skills in a variety of settings, ranging from highly-specialized, nationally-ranked, academic medical centers to diverse, community-based hospitals. They will also educate pharmacy students, other healthcare professionals, and patients on medication-related topics. Upon completion of the program, our residents will have the skills to serve as competent practitioners in a variety of pharmaceutical care settings.

Program Objectives
The resident is expected to:
Develop a solid foundation of pharmaceutical skills and knowledge.
Obtain the ability to apply those skills and knowledge in a practical setting.
Apply the knowledge gained during the residency to his/her future career.

All required rotations are 5 weeks in length.

Stipend and Benefits
A yearly stipend will be paid to all residents. Health insurance plan will also be provided. Residents will receive two weeks of paid vacation and sick leave. Travel assistance will be given for continuing education events and professional conferences.

Faculty Appointment

Successful applicants will be eligible for faculty appointment in the Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia and Hampton University School of Pharmacy.

Other Residency Requirements

1. Design and conduct a formal research project of publishable quality.
2. Attend and present residency project at the Eastern States Residency Conference.
3. Write a formal drug monograph and present to the Sentara Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
4. Co-precept a student on a clinical rotation.
5. Attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting.
6. Staff every other weekend throughout the pharmacy practice residency.
