Outpatient Surgery at Sentara Bayside Hospital

Surgical Information

Before Surgery

Call Your Surgeon
Call your surgeon if you have any questions or changes in your physical condition, including small symptoms like a scratchy throat.

Ask About Medication
If you take aspirin, ask your physician if and when you should stop taking it prior to surgery.

Make Arrangements for a Responsible Adult to Bring You Home Following Surgery
There will be no exceptions. Outpatient surgery cannot be performed without responsible adult transportation to bring you home. Cab or bus transportation is not acceptable.  Also, arrangements should be made to have a responsible adult stay with you for 24 hours following surgery.

Expect a Call 1-4 Days Before Surgery
A nurse will call you to confirm your surgery time, give you instructions, obtain a health history and discuss medications you should take (if you take any on a regular basis).
Please call our Pre-Admissions Nurse at (757) 363-6133 if you have not received a call.

Laboratory Tests, X-rays and other Diagnostic Tests
Laboratory tests, X-rays and all diagnostic tests ordered by your physician(s) must be completed 3-10 business days prior to your surgery date.  This gives your medical team time to review test results.

Follow Instructions for Your Safety and Comfort
For your safety, your surgery may be cancelled if the following instructions are not followed:
Do not drink alcohol 24 hours prior to your surgery and aviod smoking after midnight.
Adults may have solid foods until midnight the day before surgery.  Please avoid heavy, greasy foods.  After midnight, NO solid foods, milk products (of any kind) or non-clear beverages are permitted.
You MUST have a responsible ADULT to drive you home and stay with you for 24 hours after surgery, so please make arrangements prior to surgery.

Pre-Admission Testing
Pre-Admission Testing is offered from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

You may need to have routine pre-admission tests before surgery to advise your physician of your general state of health.  Tests may include lab work, X-rays or an EKG. If you need testing at the hospital, your representative can schedule a convenient time for you a week or two prior to surgery.

If your pre-admission testing is not performed at a Sentara facility, or if your physician's office performs these tests, the results must be sent in writing to the hospital (either by mail or fax) no later than 24 hours before your surgery.

Please park in front of the Outpatient Entrance, facing the Witchduck Road entrance, and register at the Admissions Desk.

Day of Surgery
Please follow these Pre-Operative instructions to help our team provide all patients with quality, efficient medical care in a safe, comfortable and convenient environment:

During the pre-operative phone call, you will receive eating and drinking instructions:
No solid foods or beverages (like orange juice, grapefruit juice, liquids with pulp or coffee with cream) after midnight the day of surgery.
No gum, candy or mints of any kind are permitted.
Clear liquids (like water, 7-Up, apple juice, and coffee without cream) are allowed and encouraged until 4 hours prior to surgery.
Arrive at the time instructed by the pre-operative nurse or your surgeon, which is usually 2 hours before the scheduled operation. Be prompt to allow the necessary time for your admission process.
Take only those medications prescribed by your physician with a sip of water the morning of your surgery.
Take usual medications (like blood pressure and heart medications) with a sip of water.
Use inhalers as prescribed the morning of surgery.
Please contact your physician about aspirin, ibuprofen, Coumadin, Heparin, fluid pills or diabetes medications.
Bring a list of your medications.
Bring your insurance I.D. card, papers given to you by your surgeon and any laboratory results or medical records you have obtained.
Minors must be accompanied by a legal guardian.
Do not bring valuables (jewelry, excessive amounts of cash or credit cards).  Be prepared to leave these with whoever accompanies you to the hospital.
Do not bring contact lenses. If you need to bring them, remember their storage case.
Wear comfortable, casual clothing.  Clothing should allow for easy undressing and dressing. We provide a surgical gown, robe and slippers.
Avoid using make-up (cosmetics), aerosol sprays, perfumes, deodorants or skin creams.
If you are being admitted to the hospital following surgery, you will need to bring a small bag containing pajamas, robe, slippers and tioletries.
Complimentary beverages and vending machines are available to visitors in the waiting area.

Following Surgery
Take it easy!  You will awaken in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Phase I where our professional staff will continue to monitor your recovery.

Ready To Go Home
When you are ready for discharge, a nurse will review home care instructions with your caregiver. Ask your family member to leave your home care instructions in a prominent place for you to read the next day.

Patients May Not Drive Themselves Home
Someone must drive you home because you may feel slightly sleepy or dizzy after anesthesia and medications.

The Next 24 Hours Are Important
The next 24 hours are important to your recovery.  Even though you are through surgery, you need to recover at home by following these instructions:
Have a responsible adult stay with you for 24 hours.
Do not drive or operate heavy equipment.
Follow special instructions provided by your surgeon and our staff.
Do not take medications without your surgeon’s approval.
Call your surgeon if you have unusual symptoms or unexpected changes in your condition.
Do not drink any alcoholic beverages.
Expect our call the first business day after your surgery.  A Recovery Room nurse will call to discuss your progress and answer any questions. Keep a written list of your questions to use during this call.
Pamper yourself and avoid strenuous activity.  Be cautious not to overdo, especially if you feel fine immediately following surgery.

Children and Surgery
Teddy bears are welcome! Surgery can be frightening to children, because the surroundings and experience are unfamiliar. Our team works with parents to reassure their child and make them feel at ease.

We Can Help
Address your or your child’s concerns.  Please ask questions.
1-4 days before surgery, our nurse will call to confirm your child’s surgical instructions. Please make sure we have your available phone numbers.
Your child will never be left alone.  From admitting to recovery, our staff will attend to your child.
