The Hospital for Extended Recovery

The CARE YOU NEED To RECOVER.

In the Hospital for Extended Recovery, we treat patients with a broad range of health needs, including:

· Wound care

· Infectious disease

· Post-surgical conditions

· Complex IV therapy

· Respiratory conditions

· Heart and circulatory conditions

For Medically Complex Needs
The hospital for Extended Recovery is an acute care hospital for treatment of diagnosed problems. We are equipped to handle medically complex patients, so the level and intensity of care provided here is higher than at a skilled nursing, rehabilitation facility or a nursing home. Most stays are at least 25 days, and insurance typically pays for a patient to stay longer periods in our hospital than in a traditional hospital.

Highly Qualified Staff
Our trained staff specialized in caring for patients with complicated medical needs. These professionals include RNs, LPNs, physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists. Attending physicians visit and consult daily, and many medical specialists are on staff.

A Multidisciplinary Approach
We provide a specialized, multidisciplinary approach to care which doesn't require the surgical or emergency services of a traditional hospital. This comprehensive approach assures that a patient's complete needs - present and future - are considered with every recommendation.

A Family-Oriented Environment
We recognize that family is essential to the recovery process. That's why we strive to create a family-oriented environment, with patients getting to know those caring for them. Family members' concerns and suggestions are an important part of each patient's treatment.

Affiliated With Sentara
Though located within Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, the Hospital for Extended Recovery is actually a separate health facility. The proximity to and affiliation with Sentara, however, assures you that if needs change, the benefits of a Level I Trauma Center are close at hand.

Our Admission Process
To be admitted to our facility, a patient is referred by his or her attending physician and then accessed by our Case Manager. The decision to admit is based on collaboration between the attending physician, case managers, the patient and his or her family. First, the patient is discharged from the diagnostic hospital that is providing care, and then admitted to our hospital. To assure continuity of care, most Sentara Norfolk General Hospital physicians can attend to patients in our facility.
