What is a Teenage Volunteer?
He/She is a special kind of teenager who serves in a hospital, without pay, giving people a helping hand. The Teenage Volunteer Program offers youths from ages 14-18 an opportunity for involvement throughout the hospital. Teenage Volunteers provide thousands of hours of valuable service to our patients, families and staff, while gaining the experience and self-confidence for themselves.
Why is a Teenage Volunteer Important?
Teenage Volunteers are important because they provide extra personal attention, care, warmth, and service with a smile. These qualities add so much to the comfort and well being of patients, leaving the regular staff to concentrate on making patients well as quickly as possible.
What are the Requirements to be a teenage Volunteer?
To apply to the Teenage Volunteer Program you must be between the ages of 14 and 18 and in good standing with your high school. In addition, you must commit to an orientation, be able to work every one to two weeks and complete the medical testing required to serve in a hospital. You are required to work a minimum of 3 hours per shift between the hours of 12pm – 8pm during the week and 8am – 8pm on the weekends.
How does a Teenage Volunteer Serve?
In many ways. He/she helps out in the departments of the hospital wherever “helping hands” are needed. A Teenage Volunteer receives careful preparation for the job; an interview, orientation and on-the-job training. Volunteers are assigned tasks for which they are specifically trained. Each volunteer works the hours they schedule with hospital personnel. Once the volunteer makes the commitment to follow a set schedule he/she is expected to adhere to that schedule.
Areas to Work as a Volunteer:
Volunteers are needed in many areas of the hospital. Volunteers can work with the reception desks, surgical units, medical units, gift shops, emergency department, women’s health services, cardiac services and outpatient services.
