Sentara Obici Hospital
Obici Breast Health Services Testing & Diagnostic Services
One out of nine women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. When detected early, breast cancer is a treatable disease with good survival rates. Obici’s Breast Health Center offers the latest diagnostic and treatment options including:
* Digital Mammography * Screening mammography using computer-aided ImageChecker technology. * Diagnostic mammography with on-site radiologists. * CAD-X is an innovative computer-aided detection technology that assists radiologists in the early detection of breast cancer. * Personalized diagnostic evaluation and follow-up consultation. * Fine needle aspiration. * Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy. * Stereotactic and ultrasound-guided core biopsy as well as open biopsy. * Mammotome ultrasound guided biopsy. * Comprehensive surgical and oncological services. * Reconstructive Surgical Options including the DIEP flap which is one of the newest advances in breast reconstruction surgery. * Ultrasonography
Digital Mammography Screening mammography, along with regular self-exams, is one of the most effective ways to detect breast cancer at its earliest and most treatable stage. Obici Hospital offers women the most advanced form of mammography available --digital mammography -- in a comfortable, reassuring environment.
Similar to the technology found in digital cameras, digital mammography replaces x-ray film with solid-state detectors that convert x-rays into electric signals. The electrical signals are used to produce images of the breast that can be seen on a computer screen or printed on special films to look like regular mammograms. Digital mammography can only be performed only in facilities, such as Obici Hospital, that are certified by Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Some of the benefits of digital mammography include:
* The number of callbacks is reduced. Because the image can be enhanced with the computer before they are printed on film, physicians can see lots of images with a limited number of pictures. * Less anxiety is generated when results are seen immediately. * Digital mammography images can be electronically manipulated – optimizing the view of different parts of breast tissue with just four standard pictures. * With Obici’s mammography services, you can be confident that you are taking care of your health.

CAD-X Everyone knows that early detection is a key weapon in the fight against breast cancer. That’s why Obici Hospital offers patients an additional measure of security -- the latest technology for the reading of routine screening mammograms - the CAD-X.
Studies show that general use of the CAD-X could result in the detection of additional numbers of breast cancer. These numbers represent women whose cancer might not otherwise be found until they return for their next year’s mammogram. In some cases, that’s time enough for a tumor to double in size.
The radiologist first reviews the mammogram on the digital screen, then the radiologist activates the display unit to review the mammogram on a two-way display monitor. The CAD-X looks for areas or masses by comparing the results to accepted clinical criteria and calls them to the attention of the radiologist. The radiologist can then review the original mammogram, paying particular attention to areas identified by the CAD-X.
Stereotactic Biopsy Stereotactic biopsies, offered at Obici Hospital, give patients needing a breast biopsy an alternative to an invasive surgical procedure. This innovative technology is a minimally invasive procedure that allows for the accurate diagnosis of breast abnormalities.
Using this technology, after applying local anesthesia, the physician makes a small incision and inserts a probe into the area that has been identified as suspicious. Then, the physician guides it using the stereotactic imaging system. Once inside, the instrument vacuums, cuts and removes tissues for examination. The physician can also place a tissue marker into the area of the biopsied breast to help manage future care including future mammograms and biopsies.
Unlike traditional biopsies, this procedure, which often takes less than an hour, is done in an outpatient treatment area instead of an operating room. Women who have a stereotactic biopsy can resume normal activity immediately following the procedure. Because the incision is so small, no stitches are required.
Ultrasound Guided Mammotome Biopsy Mammotome biopsies, offered at Obici Hospital, give patients needing a breast biopsy another alternative to invasive surgical procedures. This innovative technology is a minimally invasive procedure that allows for the accurate diagnosis of breast abnormalities.
With ultrasound guidance, you will be given a local anesthetic to minimize any discomfort. The procedure typically takes less than one hour, and you will be able to resume your normal activities immediately afterwards.
Ultrasonography Ultrasound uses sound waves and their echoes to locate and visualize internal organs. It is particularly useful in looking at soft tissue that does not x-ray well.
