Sentara Obici Hospital deals quickly, efficiently, and expertly with cardiac patients through intensive care and progressive care to outpatient rehabilitation. With the exception of open heart procedures, usually performed at large metropolitan hospitals, Sentara Obici is able to meet the needs of most heart patients, from diagnosis through rehabilitation.
A state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization lab offers more than a dozen procedures, including doppler colorflow studies and the implantation of pacemakers. It was the first in Hampton Roads to offer bi-plane transesophageal echocardiograms, a study that greatly enhances a physician's view of the flow of blood in and out of the heart.
New Select Secure Pacing lead available at Sentara Obici Hospital
As you know pacemakers help to regulate heart rhythm. The traditional ventricular lead is placed via sheath down through the subclavian vein to the right ventricle. There is very little you can do to direct the lead to go exactly where you want, so you place it where you get the best pacing, and sensing thresholds sometimes you have to try several placement attempts to find the correct location. When the lead is pacing, it sends out and electrical current that travels through the ventricles the same way a circle of waves is formed when you drop a stone in the water. The result is that the right ventricle is excited before the left ventricle and they don't squeeze at exactly the same time. This can cause congestive heart failure in a number of patients, who then have to come back for bi-ventricular pacing system, which take hours to put in and the cost is incredibly higher.
The select secure lead is steerable and can be placed in a selected location near the hearts normal electric pathway. This allows both ventricles to contract in a normal manner. This leads to a dramatic decrease in incidence of congestive heart failure, which in turn reduces the incidence of re-admission to the hospital.

Event monitoring and 24-hour holter monitoring allow heart patients to continue their normal activities with the reassurance that if an abnormal episode occurs, the event will be documented for evaluation by a cardiologist.
