Our History
Planetree
Our History Since 1951, the residents of Suffolk and the surrounding communities have been heir to a legacy of health and hope through the generosity of one man, Amedeo Obici, the founder of Planter's Peanuts. When his wife, Louise, died in 1938, Obici, who was one of the nation's leading industrialists, he establish a lasting memorial - one that would pay a fitting tribute to the woman he loved and the place they both loved and called home, Suffolk, Virginia.
This memorial, The Obici Charitable Trust financed the building of the Louise Obici Memorial Hospital. Construction on the original hospital on North Main Street began in the summer of 1949 and the hospital was dedicated on September 16, 1951.
Thanks in part to the continuing generosity of the Obici Trust, the new Obici Hospital was dedicated in 2002. Portraits of Amedeo and Louise, along with other items relating to the Obici family and their involvement in the Suffolk community, can be seen in the Heritage Hallway, a pictorial display of the hospital's history, located on the Garden Level of the new hospital.
Today, Louise Obici Memorial Hospital is proud to serve as the primary healthcare provider for the people of Suffolk and all of western Tidewater. Offering a unique system of healthcare that emphasizes a holistic, patient-centered approach, Sentara Obici Hospital continues to dedicate itself to the practice of healing.
