Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center offers comprehensive wellness programs through the Health Education Center (HEC). HEC programs that benefit community members include:
• Diabetes Education • Heart Health • Medical Nutrition Therapy • Weight Management
Diabetes Education Program Diabetes Education is a comprehensive out-patient program certified by the American Diabetes Association. A multi-disciplinary team, taught by a Registered Nurse and Registered Dietitians specialized in diabetes education, are credentialed Certified Diabetes Educators. Diabetes Education is provided in a variety of forums including group and individual sessions. Diabetes Education specializes in adults, and also provides education to adolescents and their families.
Educational content and time allocation is determined by an individual’s needs, educational requirements, the physician’s referral, and the educator’s assessment. The program goal to educate and assist with behavioral changes needed to allow an individual to take charge of their diabetes, maintaining health and wellness, and preventing the onset of complications.
Program components include:
• Diabetes disease process • Blood glucose monitoring • Nutritional management • Physical activity • Medications • Acute complications and chronic complications • Goal setting and problem solving • Psycho-social adjustment • Community resources • Preconception, pregnancy, and gestational diabetes

Medical Nutrition Therapy Medical Nutrition Therapy benefits community members with comprehensive education about a variety of services including:
• Hypertension • Hyperlipidemia • Weight control • Pediatrics • Gastrointestinal disorders • Eating Disorders • Sports Nutrition • Renal • Food allergies
To receive Diabetes Education or Medical Nutrition Therapy, you may be referred by your physician or call directly to discuss self referral. Most medical insurances cover diabetes education with an appropriate referral. Please confirm your insurance company’s verification, since coverage may be available for certain diagnoses.

Support Groups The Health Education Center facilitates an Insulin Pump Support Group and a Diabetes Support Group. These groups offer regular educational meetings to assist in managing diabetes.
