Inpatient Rehabilitation Services
Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center offers Inpatient Rehabilitation Services including:

• Occupational Therapy
• Physical Therapy
• Speech Pathology/Language Therapy

Inpatient Rehabilitation treats all hospital patients except newborns. Varying diagnoses in addition to neurological, orthopaedic, and wounds are treated. In addition to patient care, rehabilitation staff continuously strive to improve the community’s health through guest lectures for community and hospital groups on various education and training topics.

Rehabilitation is designed to achieve an optimal level of functioning, self-care, self-responsibility, independence, and quality of life. Achieving the patient’s optimal level of function means restoring, improving, or maintaining the patients’s assessed level of functioning. Rehabilitation aims to minimize symptoms, exacerbation of chronic illnesses, impairments, and disabilities. Emphasis is placed on maximizing functional independence through application of therapeutic procedures including posture, locomotion, strength, endurance, balance, coordination, joint mobility, flexibility, pain, and performance of activities of daily living. Specific applications, most performed at a patient’s bedside, may include:

• Gait/transfer training
• Evaluation and instruction in the use of adaptive equipment
• Therapeutic modalities
• Home exercise instruction
• Manual therapy
• Neuromuscular re-education techniques
